I volunteered for the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp. I flew in specifically from Chicago to work with the group for the week. I only have all around positive things to say about the people running the camp and the camp itself. I have been doing a variety of volunteer work all my life and they are by far the most organized group I have encountered. From the application process as a volunteer, to the before and after meetings as the week went by, even till now when I get emails about what's going on with the group. It's just a really good group to be involved with in any way shape or form.

Not only did I teach, but I learned as well with the students and other volunteers there. It's a wonderful camp and a great opportunity for all.

If I had to make changes to the organization, I would love for them to grow in the sense of having more students to teach and more volunteers to help.

My daughter has attended the camp for three years in a row and is signed up to attend this coming summer session. She loves it and so do I. Under the pretext of learning to play an instrument, form a band, write a song and play a live show in front of hundreds of people, the girls are really learning life skills, gaining confidence and having fun. The women who run the camp are great role models for the girls.

Every time the girls take the stage is a triumph. But even the moments not in the spotlight are important. Workshops provide self-confidence and empowerment and convey a DIY spirit which the girls can use for the rest of their lives. They gain important tools for combating the anti-girl, image-based consumerism forced upon them through the mainstream media.

In addition to hearing the bands play, the showcase on the Saturday after the week-long camp could be expanded to include areas for parents and friends to get a feel for the 'zine making, the t-shirt printing and songwriting portions of the camp.

I have volunteered with BAGRC for three years now and I'm hooked! The organizations seeks to empower girls through music, and succeeds at that plus empowering volunteers through volunteering. It's pretty powerful to be in a room with all of these bright, talented, thoughtful women and allies. I would strongly suggest you volunteer for BAGRC if you have ever been a musician, or spent time wishing you were a musician. It will change your life!

My granddaughter has attended this camp for three years and her poise and self confidence in performing have skyrocketed over that time. She has developed a powerful sense of self that has spilled over to junior high school, a notably difficult time, where she has become a powerful defender of the sometimes outcast seventh graders--you DO remember the "who's in and who's out" days? At least some of the credit goes to Bay Area Girls Rock Camp. I also love that they're branching out to include Ladies Rock Camp!

My daughter has attended Bay Area Girls Rock Camp for the last three summers (from ages 10-12). She always loves it! She had been the lead singer twice and a guitar player once.

Each year, she loves her fellow band-mates and her coaches. She learns to listen to her own voice, to trust
her instincts and to go for broke. Each summer she emerges from the program more confident and comfortable in her own skin. Aside form the musical lessons and friendships, the encouragement to think critically and to voice her own opinions have been most valuable.

The program is well-run and super fun! I reccommend it highly to all girls.

My 9 year old daughter has now attended 2 sessions, and this summer will be her third. We love this program because they teach children about music, self esteem, and empowerment. They are a non profit organization that I adore because as a single mother it is very hard to find programs (after school & summer) that are affordable. I love that they have a 'compliment' board and they encourage the kids to build each other up, and recognize each other for positive stuff such as personality, appearance, or kind gestures. My absolute favorite part of the camp is the show case at the end in which the bands perform their songs. This camp teaches the children to play instruments, write songs, form bands, and preform what more could they do? We love them!

My daughter is always so happy, and her self esteem is higher or better or however you would word it. She always said she hated her hair, but after last summer when all of the girls complemented her hair and nick named her 'curlz' she is so much happier and accepting of her beautiful locks! Plus she can play music, and she has more self confidence to try things she hasn't done before. My child is all the better for attending this program.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would make Girls Rock Camp larger so that more Oakland youth could attend, and I would donate more money, and instruments so that they had more to work with.

I've had the pleasure of knowing many of the volunteers who dedicate weeks of their time during the summer (unpaid save for the all the non-monetary rewards). I also know some of the campers, so I feel I'm in a great position to see first hand how this incredible program changes all the lives involved for the better. I've watched campers as well as volunteers go from meek, timid, needlessly embarrassed people to excited, unafraid to speak or try something new rockstars! If I had one request of BAGRC it would be for it to have been available to me and my sister back in the day.

If I could I would make this organization so available to girls around the country that it would become as known as Girl Scouts is.

My daughter has attended all three years of summer camp sessions that Bay Area Girls Rock has offered so far. The first year she learned to play the drums, the second year she switched to playing bass, and then stayed with it for the third year.

The focus on empowering girls through music
is prevalent throughout the week-long camp. It's not just about forming a band and learning a song - my daughter learned what it takes to write a song, what a zine is and how to create one, self-defense, and most importantly (besides the music) how to deal with conflict. Being in a band (even for a week) is no walk in the park. Four or five personalities meshing together takes work - and they do a good job of having band coaches and band managers walk that line between letting the girls work it out themselves, and stepping in to offer solutions.

One thing that could be worked on is the mix of girls within each band being age-appropriate to one another. Last year there was a strict cutoff on age rather than grade and it put a middle schooler with elementary kids in my daughter's band. The elementary kids (my daughter included) didn't mind, of course, but I know the middle schooler was not too happy. It's a small, easy thing to change and I know that feedback will be well-taken.

This is the best, most amazing organization ever!! I was only involved for one summer a few years back but I wholeheartedly recommend this camp to anyone who is between the age of 8 and 18 for a truly revolutionary, self-esteem building, empowering experience. I think every girl in the world should get to participate in something like this, the world would truly be a better, safer, and more positive place for everyone. I also recommend volunteering and participating in their summer, after-school, and lady's rock camp programs! All amazing and wonderful experiences.

Seeing the amazing impact it had on the girls in the band I coached in just 1 week! They were holding their heads up higher and processing things in really different and thoughtful ways, they were supporting each other, and best of all they were ready to take this experience beyond the week and out into their lives.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make the volunteer group more diverse and inclusive of women from different subcultural groups, music preferences, and life experiences just to add to the experience for the girls who get to participate and so they know that there are a million ways to rock out! I'd also give them a million dollars in the hopes that it would enable many more young women to experience this!

Please note I am also a board member for BAGRC, but my first experience with the organization was as a client served. My 14 year old daughter Maggie is a rock camp alumna. She attended the first session of Bay Area Girls Rock Camp 2008 when she was 11 years old. She loved it so much, she returned again in 2009 and in 2010.
Maggie wanted to attend rock camp so she could learn an instrument and be in a band. I wanted her to go to rock camp so she could build her confidence and meet women who could be role models for her as she learns be a strong, independent person. Rock camp met all our expectations. During rock camp sessions, I see my daughter’s confidence increase every day. As she experiences the anxiety of forming a band, she learns that there is a group for her and she can fit in with girls she just met. Making her way through the negotiations of finding a band name and writing a song has taught her about problem solving, compromise and standing up for her point of view. As the sessions end with the thrill of performing for a full house at a local rock venue, Maggie learns that she is brave. Who wouldn’t feel more confident after forming a band, learning an instrument, writing a song and performing for 300 people?
Since her first week at rock camp, Maggie has remained involved with her instrument of choice; taking lessons, practicing and even performing outside of camp with a group of rock campers. Her ongoing involvement with drumming and her continued improvement in skill helped her feel a sense of accomplishment, mastery and identity; key components of resilience for adolescent girls.
