I love to walk the trails and explore the gardens at Baltimore Woods. When my daughter was young, we came to programs on bugs, birds and other critters, as well as the night sky and nature sounds. It's a less-crowded alternative to Beaver Lake Nature Center, more conducive to quiet, meditative walks in the woods.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

engaging the public in the natural world on a variety of levels, from programs on bats to native plant sales to take home to your garden. Not to mention provide access to the natural world away from concrete, cars and buildings

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

find a way to raise its profile in the community; secure more reliable, continuing funding; develop a broader and deeper volunteer or partnership network.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

quiet walks in nature. Encounters with wildlife and seasonal changes there.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

informative, friendly and unobtrusive.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Build an observatory and buy some telescopes for nightsky viewing programs. Buy and preserve and provide access to more land, different environments. Hire another naturalist or two. Pay Patty Weiss what she's worth.

Ways to make it better...

there were a few more labels on trees, plants, and locations (fen, meadow, second-growth forest, etc.) There was a listening station with audio of bird calls and songs heard at specific times of year in particular habitats at BWNC.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

money, maintenance and encroaching development (if it's not encroaching now, it will be)

One thing I'd also say is that...

they do a great job with the resources they have, and deserve more support and recognition from local, county, state and federal honchos.

It all began when my first daughter was three, and we found a beautiful and unusual caterpillar in our yard. We drove right up to Baltimore Woods Nature Center, and they welcomed us with smiles and books and helped us identify it. Having my children attend the summer nature camp for 8 years now, as well as other fantastic programs throughout those years, our family is full of gratitude for Baltimore Woods! Our experience has brought us a deeper awareness of many things: the night sky, vernal pools and spotted lizards, where maple syrup comes from, entomophagy, (the practice of eating insects as food), bird and animal identification, and even a special connection with snakes, thanks to Miss Hiss, the resident pet! Perhaps more importantly, The Nature Center has welcomed & encouraged us into its woods along its trails and streams, letting the natural surroundings seep into our very souls and help the children to be whole. Thank you Baltimore Woods!

Over the years I have spent much time at Baltimore Woods. Our family used to go cross country skiing in the winter. I have hiked the woods from the tops of the hills to the bottom where the babbling stream presents an atmosphere of tranquility and sheer beauty. I have watched the winter birds from the warmth of the main lodge, and taken part in the annual bird count. The most enjoyable season for me is springtime when I go to the Margaret Faust Wildflower garden and enjoy learning from the very well marked examples of many different wildflowers. The knowledge of the volunteers who lead the tours of the garden is exceptional. I have enjoyed the wonderful passionate presentations of John Weeks and the chance to see his paintings of flora and fauna.

Since I have lived near BW for several years, all of my children have grown up hiking and playing in these woods. Their experiences helped shape their love and appreciation for nature and its impact on our lives. My grandchildren now love the woods as much as their parents did. Many of them have attended BW summer camps. Very often they just love to hike the many trails and visit the wonderful interpretive center they now have. I enjoy taking peaceful walks in the woods during all seasons. I even did my first snowshoeing last winter with the snowshoes they have to borrow there.

I grew up in these woods and now my children go there every summer to enjoy camp. I am planning my wedding reception here at Baltimore Woods. I love their programming for all ages and especially enjoy when BW brings programming to the city of Syracuse. I cannot say enough about this wonderful organization. Every experience with the staff at BW has been positive!

Bring it's programming into the city. I envision a building for BW at one of the city parks so that all children and adults could experience BW.

Having a Family Membership at this great center, we have enjoyed many programs. My son loves the winter camp and we just all really enjoyed the Easter event. In addition, just talking a walk/hike throughout the grounds is free and a really beautiful atmosphere. We love it.
