Programs: AXIS Dance Company's programs include a performance component and an outreach an education component, "Dance Access and Dance Access/KIDS!". AXIS is an ensemble of dancers with and without disabilities under the direction of Judith Smith. AXIS has performed in theaters and alternative spaces at its home base in the Bay Area and on tour throughout the US as well as in Germany and Siberia. AXIS offers audiences a unique experience in dance. Our current repertory includes new and signature works by AXIS choreographers, Joe Goode, Joanna Haigood, and Sonya Delwaide. Additionally, Bill T. Jones will set a new work on the company in 99/00. Projects for 00/01 include a multi media work with Stephen Petronio. To date, AXIS Dance Company has created over two dozen repertory works, two full length works and two works for young audiences. Our dance vocabulary involves stunning aerial work on a variety of apparatus; floorwork with risk and precision; dance theater that is humorous and quirky; and ensemble work that is richly textured and constantly unfolding. The company performs in a wide variety of venues ranging from proscenium theaters to alternative spaces and has created site specific work indoors and outdoors. Education and outreach are an integral part of AXIS Dance Company's work. AXIS believes that providing dance opportunities to all people regardless of background serves to enrich the community, to support AXIS' performance and touring activities, and to generate greater interest and participation in "integrated" dance, dance for people with and without disabilities. In keeping with our company's collaborative approach and philosophy, AXIS strives to keep both our teaching teams and our Dance Access classes comprised of people with and without physical disabilities. Our Dance Access outreach and education program includes ongoing classes for adults, children and youth; master classes and intensive teacher trainings; performance labs; lecture demonstration; residencies and pre- and post-performance Q & A's.

The dancers in this company are wonderfully talented and committed. Yet the company has a history of high turnover in dancers and the even more unsettling truth that nearly every dancer that leaves the company leaves bitter. When people are devoting their lives to an art form that takes a toll on their bodies for very little money, it would be nice for them to be treated well and feel cared for while on the job.
