When my son was first diagnosed with ADD as a child, I was uneducated about the disorder and of course very anxious and hesitant to start medication. I found out about ADDA from the dr. we were seeing and received some information in the mail and then attended a support group meeting. I got involved in helping the group and learned some invaluable information on how to better help my son. The wealth of knowledge from the support group leader as well as the director were phenomenal as well as the level of compassion.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

A better understanding of what the disorder is and how to help someone dealing with it as well as how to help myself. Valuable resources for doctors, testing facilities, treatment facilities, support groups, conferences were amazing.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

So many more people could be helped if they could get more funding.

I have had the opportunity to interact with the organization frequently. They offer continuing education for professionals that allows those with an interest in the field to continue to expand their horizons and serve the client population better than they would otherwise be able to do without the organization's support.

I do not see the need to make changes to the organization. It is unfortunate that the difficult economic times make it difficult for the organization to reach all of the people that would be helped should they be able to should they have access to more funding.

When my son was diagnosed with ADHD 16 years ago, I was directed to ADDA-Southern Region support groups by my son's Pediatric Neurologist to give my husband and me emotional support and for us to learn more about what we could do to help him learn in spite of also being diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech and a Sensory Integration Disorder. He received several years of therapy, but because he received his therapy early in his life and because of the excellent information his father and I learned about helping him to learn in a more hands-on way.

The positive results in this organization I have experienced seeing my son, now 20 years old and not struggling with ADD as he did when he was young. He has learned a lot of coping skills as a result of the information I learned at the conferences.

ADDA-SR is an organization dedicated to serving the general public for the purpose of education regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and its related challenges. This organization disseminates current information about ADHD as well as having monthly support meetings for parents of ADHD children, and arranging for specific workshops and conventions. Additionally, the Staff respond to general questions and assist in finding referral sources and resources for those in need of assistance. They work hard and tirelessly in this endeavor and deserve a a huge THANK YOU! This is an invaluable organization and can only continue to exist through the consistant participation of the public. We should make every effort to support this very worthwhile organization in any way possible.

I learned about the ADD conference coordinated by the ADDA-SR group. I registered and attended - and am very glad I chose to spend my time this way. The event was well run, with great speakers. I'm glad I told 5 friends about the event also. Only 3 were able to attend, but we all appreciated the Saturday learning opportunity. THANKS for the great event. I've also emailed the volunteers with a couple of specific questions seeking pointers. Every time, the volunteers did get back to me in a timely manner with very relevant suggestions that got me moving in a productive direction to find appropriate information. Again, thanks to these volunteers. They've certainly helped me to understand that I'm not alone in my battle against ADD for my family.

ADDA-SR is an invaluable resource for the Texzs community. It provides excellent education about ADHD thru conferences for patients, their parents, professionals and the commnity at large. Inaddition the personal 1:1 education has been invaluable for my patients.Another key service is advocacy for students to get the appropiate services needed from schools. The staff are incredibly dedicated individuals who give their all to help those with ADHD and their families. I wish that they had more funds to be able to create more outreach into rural Texas. They are always under financial pressure and have not been able to create stable funding. I miss their mailed Newsletter. The quality is still high but emailing a newsletter misses many of the people who need it the most. They need to devise a better system of using their Professional Advisory Board to be more productive and involved. This body should be involved in fund raising. It feels that only a few of the Professional Advisory Board truly put their energies into the Organization yet the Board never changes to get rid of the dead wood. The continual financial crises are very distracting and limit this organization

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have had patients who have been supported in their efforts to receive appropiate services from their school system. They have provided extremely helpful oppurties for my own professional development.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would require the Professional Advisory Board to be more involved in supporting the organization. Their is no consequence for Board members not doing much. I would get rid of the dead wood. I would require more interaction, at least phone conferences.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Wonderful and dedicated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Focus on their mission and reach the greater Texas region in the smaller cities. Have an expanded mailed Newsletter to more people. Increase the public awareness of the organization and its expertise with advocacy for children with ADHD with school system

Ways to make it better...

The staff was not so overwhelmed. So few put in so much.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial. Everything is being done on a shoestring Developing an organiational system and how to use the Prof.Advisory Board.

I have been involved with this organization for over fifteen years and wholly support its goals and objectives. This organization has been beneficial to clients and professionals by providing information and knowledge about ADHD and providing referral sources for clients. When I first started the group over 15 years ago, I was a parent in search of help and had no idea what to expect but ADDA-SR was always been there to support me when I had questions or concerns. The organization presented me a way to offer support to parents in the community as well as information to educators, health care providers and family members at no cost. My support group provides needed contact between parents who feel alone and need someone to talk to who understands as well as information from professionals in the community. Over the years, I have had contact with hundreds of thousands of people searching for help via phone, e-mail or in person. Thanks to the organization, I had the chance to help each one of them and will continue to help them in any way I can.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

ADDA-SR helped me understand that ADHD people can be positive and productive in the community especially when most everything you hear is the negative. It provided me a means of sharing the information with others bringing hope to so many people.

I have 2 sons with issues ranging from ADHD, Dyslexia, Aspergers tendancies, PDD-NOS, etc. This organization has helped me with getting education services in the public school system (IEP, 504, etc.), learning what thier rights are, getting medical doctor recommendations, and general coping skills for a parent raising boys with learning and life issues. It has been a real help to our family.

When my son was 9 years old, he was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. I knew very little about it and needed more knowledge and also support in dealing with it. ADDA-SR was there for me! Through monthly support meetings and annual conferences, I have learned a great deal which has, in turn, helped me to help my son. Everyone was always so helpful and friendly. I learned about effective treatment strategies. Today, my son is 16 years old and is doing fantastic! I higly recommend this organization to anyone seeking similar help. It's been wonderful!
