I have partnered with ArtServe Michigan since it was first formed. Most recently I partnered with them in my role as Michigan Department of Education Arts Education Specialist - a role from which I have recently retired. It is a pleasure to comment on the importance of ArtServe Michigan to the cultural well-being of our state. From the annual student workshops with international caliber clinicians, to the daily updates on arts advocacy issues, I have relied on ArtServe Michigan's to be there as the state's voice on arts advocacy. They have been successful in reducing competitiveness across arts and arts education organizations creating a collaborative environment in which the State Department of Education, the State Arts Council and the Michigan Youth Arts Association have been able to create an arts education agenda for the state. ArtServe also provided direct service to public schools in Detroit without dedicated arts educators through a Comic Book Literacy project in which students produced their own comics and teachers received the professional development needed to continue the work in their schools without additional assistance. A non-profit I am president of has also participated in the Michigan Cultural Data Project. The face to face and webinar support has been invaluable to a small non-profit managing its resources.

They were the lead partner in the 2001 Michigan Arts Education Survey which provided the state with data related to student participation in the arts and professional development of teachers in the arts. This baseline information was used for the succeeding 10 years. They are now partners in the 2011 Arts Education Census.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Encourage them to remain actively involved in arts education advocacy.

With budget funds being cut to so many non-profits, it never fails that detail actions of the affected organization can get lost in the action. Artserve has held its' intregrity and provided the utmost superior service to the arts during these economic times. They are a true advocate to the arts in Michigan.

As an arts administrative professional seeking to relocate back to my home state, Artserve has been crucial in finding professional leads. The organization has also served as my main link that has kept me current on arts actions evolving with the Michigan.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Keep growing and keep your integrity intact.

As a professional artist and retail sales/guest services manager for Midland Center for the Arts, I find Artserve MIchigan Inc. to be a leader in compiling and presenting resources for the benefit of the artistic community of Michigan.
This past October, I was a participating artist in Artprize 2010 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Artserve Michigan was a visible and active supporter of this international event. I had the pleasure to meet, Cezanne Charles, Director of Creative Industries, during a seminar for artists on the business of art. Her knowledge and enthusiasm was compelling. Artserve Michigan was responsible for collaborating with the New York Arts Foundation to bring in this workshop. The timing was perfect as it coincided with the over 1700 artists in town for Artprize.
I regularly check the Artserve website and newsletters for current information that is relevant for artists and art organizations. It is a tremendous opportunity for me, personally, to learn and model myself after the professional members of the staff. Thank you for your tremendous and tireless work for the arts.

I gained knowledge in the best practices for professional artists.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would create more satellite locations in the field for rural artists and small city artists to have access to the resources.

Artserve Michigan has educated me & others in the arts about our role in informing our legislators about the reasons arts deserve support even in times of economic decline. They've been innovative doing this when all in our state are financially hurting. Whether an actual conference or an e-conference, they produce talking points showing why the arts are crucial to both our state's future & its current economy. Ideas from them were enacted by our legislature & they've kept arts organizations & supporters aware of whom to contact & when contact is needed.

We may not win all our battles to support the arts, but with Artserve MI we at least know what battles need fighting & how to do it. This has kept the arts from being wiped out of funding, preserving a baseline from which recovery may proceed.

Seeing some of my friends stay in MI because the film industry is becoming established here. Prior to this I've seen a departure occur, so it's good to see this reverse. Both recent grads & established artists are encouraged & any encouragement in MI is a major change!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Just keep doing what they're doing & not lose any staff nor ground in their work.
