ASTEP is a gem of an organization in a time when it is needed most. There is no greater healing catalyst than art and self expression. ASTEP exposes young people to the brilliance of the arts and uses it to inspire, broaden and strengthen the human spirit.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

fulfillingg ways by producing concerts on their behalf.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

it's leader. Mary-Mitchell Campbell is the real deal, a woman of strength, compassion and mission.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

open, loving and inspiring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

fund the education for thousands of children and use the healing capacity of the arts to change the world for the good.

I have been working with ASTEP for 5 years now, and it has changed my life. Most of all it has provided me a avenue to change other lives through the camps. It is a process oriented program that makes sure that all voices are heard in the creative and community activities. It helps me recognize how life is a constant creative process and that it is important to aproach all situations with an artists eye. Most of all, we have a lot of fun.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

how it is always different. The community is always changing so, the process will always be different and exciting.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

and are some of the best friends I will ever have for the rest of my life.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

it would change the world. There would be more programing in many more places, affecting many more children. Volunteers would be able to be paid for taking a month to do the work, leading to more opportunities for different types of artists.

Ways to make it better...

I had more time to do it. or if there was a stypend for rent expenses for the time away durring camps

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding.

This is an amazing organization that is bringing good things to people who otherwise would not have opportunities to learn and help their communities out of the grinding cycle of poverty

There are so many talented artists out there who want the chance to use their skills for something beyond themselves and ASTEP gives them that chance. And there are so many children who need outlets for self expression and for someone to take an interest in them as creative individuals so they can thrive and ASTEP gives them that chance. I only wish the program and its benefit concerts (which draw an amazing amount of talent) could get more publicity so that the program could continue to get the resources it requires.

Performing in a benefit for the organization with college students. Not only were we raising awareness and money for the organization, but since we were performing with college students we were inspiring a whole new generation of volunteers!

Mary Mitchell-Campbell and the other volunteers and organizers I have met are truly inspiring in their dedication to this work! It really is an organization where everyone gets in and "gets their hands dirty" which is wonderful.

Mary-Mitchell Campbell with the help of her superb staff have devised a unique way for to basically save the world!! I had the pleasure to visit India with her about 2 years ago. It was an experience I will never forget. Watching her be so hands on with the children was not only moving but so inspiring. She could just as easily hire a huge staff and send them. But she doesnt. Not only does she go herself but there is an in depth interview process that each applicant must go through before she sends them to execute the mission of Astep. This is a one of a kind organization!

it lets you be as much involved or as little involved as your schedule permits without penalty. The truth is the experience is so inspiring I find myself devising ways to be as much a part of it as I can!

The people from ASTEP are amazing! While being so involved with music and their own lives, they still find time to give to others. Meeting other people with this mindset and working alongside with them was just such a great experience. I've met so many interesting people, and so many friends-for-life.

I knew a little more what to expect going in. Not saying I didn't enjoy it! I loved it! But I wasn't sure what was gonna happen, I've never really taught before. There's no way you could ever be fully ready for this, though.

I was involved in a benefit concert for ASTEP and was exposed to the programs and initiatives they were bringing to various communities. As a member of the Broadway community, I have known many artists who have given their time and talents to broaden the horizons of young people around the world. I was continually impressed by the organization and enthusiasm that ASTEP brought to every project. Their programs are designed to bring immediate impact as well as life-changing experiences. I cannot recommend them more highly.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Incredibly enthusiastic and motivated. They were able to see the direct results of their giving and were changed by the experience with the kids as much as the recipients.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Bring arts and educational experiences to more and more settings. The arts are vital to children and need to be available to any and all who want to experience them.

ASTEP has been a great charity to work with- helping them gives me a real sense that I'm doing something that will have a huge positive effect for someone in India, South Africa, or New York. I've sponsored a child from their Shanti Bhavan orphanage in India for the past two years. I received the girl's story (her name is Jeevitha) and then was sent a picture of her holding a sign thanking me for the sponsorship. It was so heartwarming and I got to see exactly what I was helping to do, which was give this six year old from the lowest caste an opportunity to have an education, home, and reach her goal of becoming a local government official when she grows up. Mary-Mitchell, the head of the organization, is delightful and such a hard-working individual that I know ASTEP is being run at the highest precedent.

For the past 6 years, I have been very involved in ASTEP as a volunteer in several of their programs. I have volunteered as a music teacher in Homestead, FL, South Africa and New York. With every program, my experience has been a positive one. Mauricio Salgado, the program coordinator, is extremely passionate about his work and is always an inspiration to work with. The training and preparation have improved significantly throughout the years. I find that with each ASTEP experience I am a part of, I grow as an artist and as a teacher. I've been surrounded by such talented volunteers that allow me to stretch and grow in the process. The relationships I've formed have continued to guide me in my life and career and so many opportunities have opened up because of it. There are times when the process is intense and sleep is scarce, but at the end of each program when you see the students take the stage and you see how far they have grown, you know it was all worth it.

I have volunteered in NYC and India with this fantastic organization. I worked with children from the lowest caste in India and refugee children in New York City. I was able to use my artistic talents to teach HIV/AIDS education, grammar, history, and social justice. Teaching through the arts is a powerful way of teaching because the students don't realize how much they are learning since they are having so much fun! I believe strongly in the power of art to change the world based on these experiences.
