I have seen the Arthritis Foundation truly make strides in the past year with engaging local legislators in putting a cap on specialty tier medication co-pays, and incorporating their mission into their events. Anyone I know with arthritis get's a lecture from me to contact the Pittsburgh Arthritis Foundation for information. These people really care about helping each and every person they talk to, and I have seen them change lives. Their programs are offered all over Western Pennsylvania, and are evidence-based to improve mobility.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would make sure everyone knows that everyone gets arthritis. Even kids.

I chose to become a volunteer after being diagnosed with rhuematoid arthritis 5 years ago. This has not been an easy diease to live with, especially when you are in your 30s and do not look sick. The Arthritis Foundation has been a second family to me. They can help get information on medicines you are taking, help find a doctor, provide classes to ease and manage arthritis pain and offer forums to help deal with your diease. I only partcipate in organizations that I truly believe in and this is one of them. My whole family is involved in helping now and I couldn't be more proud!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have been to several walks and jingle bell runs in the past 5 years, went to a tai chi class, was certified to teach a self-help class (taught 2 -8 week classes), spoke on behalf of RA patients a some forums, went to open forums for PT, OT, rhuematologists.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Raise more money for research. People do not know how much this diease affects a person and an entire family until it happens to you. I've been through a ton of medicines and just want one that will put me into remission so I can play and keep up with my kids. I feel like I am often much older than I am and have had half my life taken from me. The sad part is that RA can strike very young children as well. More research is needed!

The Arthritis Foundation does a great job of offering events and resources for Kids with Arthritis and their families! From walks to family days to pirate games to advocacy, there are multiple ways to get involved in the organization and meet others who have arthritis!
Cheers to those of you
who work so hard (with a lot of time after hours and on the weekends) to make these events possible for CHILDREN in Western PA and surrounding areas with arthritis to have a venue to meet one another and empower them to learn more about their disease and really "Take Control"!!!

I originally got involved and volunteered last year with the Pittsburgh AF as part of my company's sponsorship. I have since continued to volunteer for both my company and on a personal level. My experience with the current staff has been and continues to be fantastic. I find the staff to be very dedicated, educated and very hard working.
They are always looking for more and better ways to be successful, always looking to grow their events. They have been very open to both suggestions and feedback. They brainstorm prior to events and gather post event to discuss openly what went well, what didn't go well and what they can do better. They also have provided education, assistance and support to some of my clients I've referred that are currently struggling with arthritis. They took the time to outreach to my referrals and become a resource for them.
My experience has been unquestionably positive.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my personal stuggle with OA as well as the support they provide to people I have referred to them. I receive the AF newsletters that provide excellent information, suggestions and education to help anyone that struggles with arthritis. Other's that I volunteer with have also shared stories of impact and have continued to volunteer their services because of those positive experiences and relationships shared.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

like them to be able to have more interns that could help with a lot of the preparation and busy work. That would enable AF to utilized everyone to their greatest strengths and skill sets.

I currently volunteer for this organization (Pittsburgh location) and I continue to have great experiences. I have worked with the current staff for the past 1 1/2 years and they have been very organized, very professional and very dedicated. They are open to learning and always looking for new ways to be more successful and competitive in the non-profit market.
I feel AF fights tiredlessly to have their voices heard and remain relavant.
I also feel and have witnessed that the current Pittsburgh staff works very hard with the limited resources they have.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My ongoing involvement with AF. I have also called on them for my personal struggle with OA as well as family members arthritis. They have always responded reached out and made a positive impact. I also like the newsletters. Find them to be very informative.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have additional staff or interns so they can maximize the skill set and time of the key individuals.

Do NOT give any money to this organization. Just the one in Pitt. All fluff. Website looks nice and shiny with stuff, NOT TRUE. Nothing that helps and just ask for your money. I used to volunteer years ago too.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the mission is great. When it is done.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Actually do stuff like other arthritis foundations for people with arthritis rather than just take the money

More feedback...

Ways to make it better...

they were organized and did stuff that helped people, rather than just spend it on "research".

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

leadership. Lack of. Vision. Ethics. If the money is being wasted on "research", then everything must change. Sad.

One thing I'd also say is that...

It wasn't always this way. And, not all arthrits foundations are like that. I only know it since I have talked to other ones and ask them what they do. This Pitt one, unethical with taking your $$$.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every six months
