The Arizona Asthma Coalition provides expert advice and relevant information for asthmatics and parents of asthmatic children. Asthma is epidemic, affecting 6% of children nationally with rates as high as 28% in urban centers (Centers for Disease Control 2006, Nicholas et al. 2005). Asthma results in $14 billion in treatment costs and 12.8 million missed school days annually, leading to poorer educational outcomes and reduced prospects of success for children and communities (National Institute of Health 2002, American Lung Association 2005). The coalition acts as an important resource for many professionals working in diverse areas and with diverse groups. I am very grateful for the work they do.

I have found the information shared by the AZ Asthma Coalition is very helpful and have shared much with nurses in my own school district as well as across the state as the President of the School Nurses Organization of Arizona. I am not able to make it to the Phoenix Coalition meeting because I live in Yuma, AZ (a 3 hr trip each way, I feel that the Coalition is working hard to make sure those of us in the trenches with asthma students are benefiting by all the programs that the Coalition has put in place across the state. I know that our local Coalition always struggles to raise money to hold the annual Asthma Camp (Camp-Not-A-Choo) and the Air Quality Flag program, we are all trying to do the best we can at at the same time having many successes along the way.
