The Arizona Asthma Coalition (AAC) has been a valuable partnership for our Tobacco Asthma Coalition. They have provided us with the resources, technical assitance and guidance with coalition activities such as the Asthma Camp and the Wind Advisory Flag program. We truly appreciated all that you do to improve the quality of life for Arizonans living with asthma through education and awareness.

Having a state asthma coalition has greatly helped our local county coalition not "reinvent the wheel". Because of the AAC we have up-to-date news on legislative and policy issues and access to useful user friendly tools and resources online.

The Arizona Asthma Coalition is a very special nonprofit organization. It is made up of physicians, Residency Directors, pediatricians, certified asthma educators, nurses, parents of asthmatics, state officials, health plans, industry and many concerned citizens who want to improve the delivery of healthcare and the lives of asthmatics. All of these individuals work tirelessly and pro bono to educate and advocate for asthmatics. This organization has worked to: develop public awareness programs, develop educational toolkits for healthcare providers and parents, advocate and pass legislative acts and develop outreach programs to improve the identification of children with asthma. This organization actually delivers the goods! The State of Arizona does not have a department targeting asthma despite spending over a 100 million dollars a year on healthcare dollars on asthma. This coalition is the one organization where parents, concerned citizens and providers can go to, to find information and access the people who have the knowledge on how to improve asthma outcomes. The AAC helps to identify resources of information and people who are working on advocacy issues and delivery of services. Each year the AAC puts on a state wide meeting where national thought leaders discuss outstanding issues in asthma. This meeting is always well attended and brings together the many counties of Arizona to help improve and educate concerned providers about asthma, whether it is about adherence to medications or access to healtcare. The AAC fosters building relationships to cast a large net to help as many asthmatics as possible. This coalition is valuable because it gives voice to the voiceless!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I have been involved in the development of state wide meetings, advocating on the state level for improved air quality and interacting with state officials to help in the delivery and access of healthcare.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Increase membership of this organization. Develop relationships with large umbrella organizations that could help with fundraising. This would free up time to board members to work more on healthcare issues than fundraising.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
working with dedicated individuals who are selfless about improving the lives of asthmatics.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
dedicated, intelligent and deeply concerned about asthmatics and improving the delivery of care of asthmatics for the State of Arizona.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Develop programs to identify children with asthma and provide for more open access to healthcare to those who do not have the knowledge about asthma or services in the State of Arizona.
Ways to make it better...
I could spend more time developing programs to improve asthma outcomes rather than focusing on fundraising.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Fundraising in years of deep recession.
One thing I'd also say is that...
The mission of the AAC is to decrease deaths from asthma. This is a goal that is possible if only more people could be educated about asthma. This is why it is so important to support this coalition.

Although my involvment was short-lived, I could see that this group was very inclusive of diverse groups with a vested interest in improving quality of life and access to services for patients (especially children) with asthma in our state. Most impressive to me was how informed the group was from a political stand point. One area of improvement for the group would be to be more open to new and fresh ideas!

I have working with the Arizona Asthma Coaltion since 2005. I was asked to be the chair of the first annual asthma conference. I was truly honored and it was a great success and has continued to be for the past five years. This conference boasts specialists from all areas of the country and all fields of expertise. The conference has received great positive feedback and has been helpful in attempting to manage asthma in AZ. I am pleased that I am still able to be a part of the coaltion.
