The mission of the arc of tempe is to empower and enrich the lives of persons with developmental disabilities by teaching self-advocacy, life skills, and civic involvement through hands-on learning and recreational activities.

The arc of tempe continued its life skills, advocacy and recreation programs in 2014. Approximately 50 developmentally and intellectually disabled individuals benefited each month from a wide range of activities throughout the year. These activities included trips to the phoenix zoo, arizona diamondback baseball games, cultural entertainment events, the greatest human race, as well as recreational activities such as bowling, hiking, camping, music therapy and exercise therapy. Participants took part in a collaborative talent event, a time to shine, with a partner organization, best buddies. The arc also collaborated with the city of tempe. At the end of the year, we relocated our thrift store due to the planned demolition of its previous location by the city of tempe.

Our son has been an active member of the recreation program operated by The Arc of Tempe. It has provided him with the opportunity to go into the community with his friends.... and has provided us an opportunity to go out without having a concern for his safety and well being. I know the organization has members that have helped other parents gain much needed services from governmental agencies. The one problem I see is a great need for additional space to better meet the needs of the people that they are providing services to in the recreation area.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

a safe place for my handicapped son to go where he can enjoy social activities with peers, outings in the community, participation in Special Olympics and much more.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the number of caring volunteers who have become friends for life.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Over the almost 40 years of involvement with this organization the majority of the staff have been very caring and helpful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It could buy land and build a larger recreation center with a commercial kitchen, exercise equipment, a multi- purpose room with a stage for performances, where more handicapped individuals would be served.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

Our son has been a participant in the recreation program for many years. This provides him with many friends and the opportunity to become involved with most every aspect of our community. For example, they attended a city council meeting and this has resulted in his attending other government functioned activities. The program provides us some free time and provides him the time to be with his friends in a fun setting.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly, concerned and caring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build the much needed community center that they have been working toward for several years.
