My experience with AppleTree convinced me of the value of a focus in literacy and an early childhood educational focus. AppleTree achieves great results because of its model that includes excellent and well trained teachers, and classroom resources that touch the neediest children.

The Great!

I assisted Appletree Institute in a previous position with a foundation that offered financing support and guarantees for public charter schools. After I left that position, I was asked to join the Board of Trustees. Singularly: I am impressed that the organziation can help children who otherwise would enter kindergarten significantly behind their peers to perform at the same level of their peers. The data driven model and intensive staff training is making a difference for kids and a difference in our community that will endure for many years ahead.

The Great!

AppleTree is an organization that immediately touched me from my first exposure. Working to provide a better life for underserved children in the District of Columbia through early childhood development is something was very much needed in the District. Their results are outstnding and give children and opportunity for success in their early learning years.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Reviewing the results of their programs. Their children consistently rank in the top when compared to other more traditional programs.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them the ability to staff their organization as needed and provide the necessary tools and equipment for them to expand nationwide.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Seeing the passion that the staff has i what they do not matter how high the hill is that are facing.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very dedicated and full of energy and commited to what they do.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Start to take this program nationwide and secur better space to meet their mission.

Ways to make it better...

The organization was given the opportunity to expand as needed within the District. There are many hoops and hurdles that must be jumped through and over to get things done in the city.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

How to maintain growth and sustainability that their success is bringing.

One thing I'd also say is that...

A great group of people working for a great cause with measurable results.

Coming from a public policy background, I value that AT has a sharp focus on putting in place effective educational practices. AT reviews the current research on how to help preschoolers get up to speed in their literacy skills, puts that research into practice, and then evaluates whether their work is up to par. This program can show that it is effective and is worthy of support.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have been involved with AT for a few years now and have visited the classrooms numerous times.

Apple Tree serves preschool children who are at risk of academic failure in one of the worst school systems in our nation - Washington, DC. The program is so successful that other states have hired them for teacher assessment and review implementation. They were just awarded an Obama I3 grant to take their program to others, and they are still growing their own school size. They opened 2 more sites this fall so their growth rate is strong. One Nobel Laureate economist recommends investment in young children as the best way to improve society; this program gathers hard data to support the program's success and works with and supports teachers in and out of the classroom. It is my highest philanthropic priority. Thank you.

The Great!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing the difference it makes in the lives of at risk children, including that crime is reduced in neighborhoods once the schools are put there.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Caring, nurturing, and smart about education. If a child isn't making progress in an area, they look at another way to teach the subject and have many others whose opinions they can solicit for best practices.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

complete the buildout of 3 schools of 140 students each in underserved areas of Washington, DC, and augment a federal grant which funds the expansion of this program to other schools and geographic areas.
