Apalachee Center may not be perfect for some, but is in a constant state of Improvement. They allow/encourage their employees to seek new ways to improve the system and levels of care. They seek the most qualified and caring and I do emphasize "caring"people to work the 'trenches'. They DO listen to employees that take valid issues to them. Their compensation packages are above average in the area period and make up for issues of lower payscales. And the salaries in administration do appear a little top heavy. But people need to see the Bigger Picture in that it IS a nonprofit and must seek outside donations and Grants in order to exist which in itself is not an easy job! They not only seek funds for the Center, but for ALL mental health in Florida. The Administrator there is a staunch advocate for the Mentally Ill.
As for services; overall they are are the Best in this area! For every disgruntled person, there at least a hundred success stories for employees and Clients served!

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Expand the FACT program in the area and outlying counties. Add more Group Homes or ALF's. And also would pursue more education of the public to decrese the stigma that the word 'Mental Illness' carries.

I am way satisfied with FACT services. At long last, my son is compliant with his meds.

This is perhaps technically a non-profit but in fact it exists to make a profit for those at the top of the organization at the expense of those who work in the trenches at the bottom. It exists to document billable services rather than to serve patients. It pays its actual workers very little and its senior staff a great deal. It creates an atmosphere that discourages employees from working to help the patient/client since to do so means the employee does not have the time to document the billable hours required for that employee to keep his/her job. After a year or two of "failing to meet" those unreasonable expectations and being told the employee is performing poorly he/she looks for employment elsewhere unless he/she has ties to the rural community where the CMHC is located and must put up with no raise and constant criticism to keep a job. Patients/clients must accept whatever services are offered or get no services at all. The truly indigent are not eligible for service. Only those with insurance are accepted and even they are charged a co-pay that is often greater than what the service is actually worth.

I would create a system that would focus on the patients/clients and attempt to help them get better and stay better. They need care workers who know their problems and who care enough to help them find solutions that will enable them to improve their mental health. I would guarantee employees the ability to tell exactly how they feel about their jobs without retribution!
