I got involved with ARME through their project "Beagle Freedom Project." I am a volunteer, a foster parent, and I've even adopted a couple family members from this organization. The level of involvement they provide our community is unprecedented and the passion they have for our furry (and even not so furry) friends far exceeds any other non-profit I've come into contact with.

"Life-changing" is not a term to be thrown around lightly, but even a phrase of that magnitude feels lacking when describing my experiences with ARME. In the past year I've volunteered, I've personally seen and helped scores of animals find a new life after being rescued from laboratories, hoarders, and high-kill shelters. But ARME's mission doesn't stop there, which is what makes it so special and so much more impactful than any other rescue group. ARME strikes at the core of animal neglect, abuse, and exploitation -- not just rescuing animals but also educating the public about the perils these creatures face at the hands of man. Community outreach is done via campaigns over social media, film, and print and is shockingly effective, enough so that I constantly hear of people affirming significant lifestyle changes thanks to ARME's influence.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
My own life - having been shown there's way to live one's life in a truly ethical fashion without being vegan. The lives of those around me - who have seen ARME's impact on my life and have been compelled to action themselves. Finally, our rescued animals, Gidget, Bella, and Sid, who were saved by ARME from a shelter, a lab, and the streets respectively.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Get more people involved. ARME has an important message that needs to be heard by everyone.

While ARME (aka the Beagle Freedom Project) has rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed hundreds of sweet animals over the past few years, the project that is most personal to me is the rescue of the "Spanish Forty" : forty beagles that had been liberated from a pharmaceutical testing lab in Spain.
I was blessed to be chosen as a foster mom for two of the Spanish Forty beagles. Sebastian (later named "Kipper" by his forever family) was young and strong and cocky. He didn't seem broken by the years of abuse and quickly adapted to life outside the cage. Bold and vital and loveable, I knew he would thrive as a beloved member of his new forever family.
Ebenezer, I wasn't so sure of. It was dark when I picked up the two beagles at ARME, so when I got them home and had a chance to see them in the light, at first, I was so dismayed at the sight of this sad, decrepit wreck of an animal. We were told that none of the dogs were older than seven years, but Ebenezer looked like he was on the downhill side of fourteen. Abuse and exposure to carcinogens had turned his muzzle grey and tumors bulged on his hips and jaw. Terrified of freedom, he spent most of his time under the coffee table, its confines reminding him the familiarity of his cage. Lying without moving for days or perhaps weeks, he considered it completely normal that the circulation in his hind legs would fail and that having his legs numb and paralyzed was how life was supposed to be. Every morning, I would have to put a leash on him and gently coax him out from under the coffee table, walking him gently around the backyard, working the muscles in his legs. What a joy it was when, after a few weeks, I would come home to find him walking around voluntarily, tentatively exploring my backyard.
A forever home was found for Ebenezer, but the years of chemical testing caught up with him and he developed Canine Masticatory Muscle Myositis, or something similar, and his jaw froze shut. Unable to eat or even drink, in a few weeks, Ebenezer was near death, a desiccated shadow of what he had been.
But ARME/Beagle Freedom Project wouldn’t give up on sweet Ebenezer. They took him back and nursed him back to health. Using a syringe to feed him watered down food and liquids, he recovered. The love and veterinary care provided by ARME/BFP was vital as well and within weeks, he had regained much of his lost weight and was wagging his tail with happiness whenever his saviors were near.
When Shannon at BFP asked if I could watch Ebenezer for a week while she was out of town, I was happy to oblige. Since Ebenezer was the only male among my three girl dogs, he seemed to enjoy his top dog status at my house and when he decided that he preferred to stay with me rather than go on to another family, I bowed to his superior judgment. He is now an active loving dog who lives to be patted. He cuddles with my girls and enjoys long hikes in the mountains. His legs grow stronger with every hike. On our earlier hikes, the slightest rise or rock in the path would stymie him, but now he scampers up seven foot high slopes like a mountain cat!
Ebenezer, the saddest of the Spanish Forty, now lives and loves, thanks to the efforts of the Beagle Freedom Project

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?
Fulfilled and loved.
Bar none the most effective animal rescue group in Southern California. ARME's services extend not only to helping individual animals but creating effective programs that strike at the roots of animal abuse. The group is headed by a nationally known attorney specializing in animal protection issues, giving it unique strengths and capabilities.

What is unique about this organization?
ARME is not simply a dog-and-cat rescue/adoption organization. There are dozens if not hundreds of pet rescue groups, but only one that is committed to public education and outreach as a core part of its mission. And frankly, no other rescue organization would even be qualified to engage in that mission.
