As the Investigations Director and Executive Director for the United States Equine Rescue League, Inc., I have had the pleasure of working with the attorneys of the Animal Legal Defense Fund on a variety of cases over the past 2 years. Their dedication and expertise in the area of animal law is unsurpassed, and the assistance that they have given to the horses in our program has been crucial. There are horses today that no longer have to fear where their next meal is coming from, or if they will have shelter and love in their life, because of the work that ALDF does. Our first case with ALDF representing the horses was that of ALDF vs. Keating, where 7 horses were found starving to death, 3 of them foals, and two of them pregnant. USERL had been investigating Keating for over 6 years, and with the help of ALDF we were finally able to end the horses suffering. All the horses from that case are now in loving, happy homes.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

In the cases that we have worked on together, and by looking in the eyes of the horses that will never again know a life of neglect and abuse.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Working with other animal lovers who are dedicated to ending animal neglect and abuse.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Extremely dedicated to the cases they are fighting to win and the animals involved in those cases.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the life of so many neglected and abused animals, as well as lobby for stronger cruelty laws.

My husband and I have been donors and supporters of ALDF for many years. We initially were interested in the organization because of their unique and focused mission of fighting for animal rights through the legal system. Our support was modest at first, but as we saw the amazing work that was being done, we decided to support ALDF with more and more of our charitable contributions. While there are other (also wonderful) organizations that fight for animal rights, there are none that we are aware of that works to SHAPE the future of animal law in the way that ALDF does. The cases they choose to fight are ones that will make a difference for more than the animals involved in the case. The cases that ALDF wins protects the innocents of the future, as well as, the present. The work ALDF does incredibly important to the future of all animals. We've had the privilege of meeting and talking with some of the Executive Staff at ALDF, both current and former, and we are always impressed by their commitment to the animals. All of the attorneys and staff that work at ALDF could probably be making a lot more money elsewhere, but they choose instead to make animal rights their life's work. It's not an easy job and yet they choose it for their love of all animals. If you have any doubts that this is an incredible organization filled with incredible people, just read a few of the heartbreaking cases that they are working on. To just hear the stories is difficult, but to realize that these folks see the torture and horrors firsthand and keep fighting is nothing short of amazing. ALDF is the premier organization fighting for advances in animal law and they are making a difference, for both companion and non-companion animals alike. I highly recommend this organization and I believe that ALDF is indeed a GREAT non-profit organization!

their success stories. Read some of their stories to find out exactly how they are shaping the future of animal law.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not change the organization, but try to persuade more animal lovers to support them. ALDF needs our help!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

knowing that the contributions I've made are being used to defend and protect those who otherwise have no voice, both now and in the future.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

COMMITTED to helping animals. They all seem to have a lot of pets, some even adopted from a case they've worked on! The staff I met were vegan, as well, so they definitely live their lives in compassionate ways.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

change the world for animals living in the U.S.!

Ways to make it better...

I had more money to contribute.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of funds and support. ALDF is not as well known as PETA or HSUS, but their financial needs are just as great because legal cases are expensive to fight.

ALDF is a wonderful organization that I feel uses my donations in an efficient and effective manner to make a difference in the lives of domestic and farm animals. Many animal groups focus solely on pet species, while ALDF fights hard for those species we tend not to focus on in our daily lives. Pigs and veal calves may not be as cuddly as puppies, or as majestic as horses, but they are just as deserving of humane treatment. ALDF has been there to fight for the rights of these animals with little to no voice in our society.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

completely end veal consumption (something they have made great strides toward already) and safeguard the basic rights of every pet and farm animal in the United States.
