I was a very active volunteer for a number of years until I was no longer physically able to do the things I did. I volunteered at PetSmart for the months the cats were in residence, then maintained the mailing list, the donations list (including acknowledging donations), and did the newsletter a few times. With the downturn in the economy, it has become more and more difficult to raise funds, but the Board and volunteers engage in as many fundraising efforts as their numbers allow. It is amazing what this group accomplishes with the money it has and with only one paid person. Although the Founder "officially retired" in 2007, she remains very active and does all of the Grant Writing. I have two animals adopted from Animal Advocates (client), in addition to having volunteered and am a donor.

Animal Advocates of Moore County, NC is a uniquely, proactive charity. They began to be proactive & innovative before other rescue groups ever thought of changing their policies. AAMC (a brev.) is very involved in cat trapping or TNR. Over the years they have captured and sterilized 4315 feral cats. The few that could not be returned to their colony were taken to a specialized sanctuary built on 80 acres where the cats can live out their lives in peace. Volunteers travel one hour each way to feed, clean and care for the cats whom roam free if they choose & can feed in two buildings. AAMC also has a program of assisting veterinarians who take in severely injured animals that the owner or founder wants euthanized. We accept responsibility for the dog or cat and pay the emergency vet bill.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have personally experienced many results of this organization by witnessing families accept dog or cat food given to them by AAMC and watching the tears and joy at families being able to keep their pets although they are out of work. I have personally experienced the devotion of Barb Shepherd working in the night during rain and snow to capture a lost pet. This charity of animal rescue goes way beyond what is expected of them.

If I had to make changes to AAMC I would attempt to assist them in getting more volunteers: people to answer the phones, people to show off their cats at Pets Mart or PetSense. Their office number is 910-944--5098 if you need help....ask for Barb Shepherd the Director of Operations.

I am the founder of Animal Advocates which began May 31, 2000. We are located in Aberdeen, North Carolina and our EIN is: 01-0590995. For years I have been trying to update my account to bring it up to date but once I log in with my name Maureen Burke-Horansky the Founder of Animal Advocates and have been their grant writer for 11 years, the site will not let me make changes. I have written to NPO Guidestar.org to help me but they seem unable to help me make changes. My grantors expect my information to be on Guidestar. If any one out there reads this and can help me access my own organization and are given the go ahead to up grade our information, I will be very, very grateful. Thank you.

If I had to make changes to this organization I would ask Guidestar staff to permit the founder to do so.
