I am so proud of the American Indian Association of Illinois. With very little funding, they have graduated more American Indian college students than any other college or university in Illinois. They also started the first American Indian Museum in Chicago, and continue the work of the oldest American Indian Dance group in Illinois-the Black Hawk Performance Company. They are truly terrific!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Making sure that American Indian students feel welcomed and supported. All students receive one on one advising, counseling, tutoring, and any assistance they might need to complete college. This is all done with a respect for the tribal cultures they come from.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Help them gain more funding. With more money, they could help more American Indians. This is the best American Indian nonprofit and the most cost effective in the midwest.

This is the most incredible American Indian organization in Illinois dedicated to education for American Indian people. It provides a first class BA degree program called Medicine Shield, fully accredited through Eastern Illinois University in a weekend format. Native Scholars is the name of the after school tutoring program serving CPS children. The Chicago American Indian Museum Without Walls also calls AIAI home and the Black Hawk American Indian Music and Dance Performance Company is a Chicago favorite. AIAI and Medicine Shield-EIU are graduating more American Indian students than any other college or university in Chicago and making an incredible difference in the lives of American Indian and other children in CPS.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

AIAI truly cares about serving its community and bringing the best educational programs to it. They value traditional American Indian cultures and want all Native people to succeed.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable about the programs.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Buy a permanent school and museum building, serve a thousand more children and adults, change the way Chicago views American Indian history and culture, have great impact on national urban American Indian education and public policy.
