Location: 1331 G Street, NW Suite 200 Washington DC 20005 USA

Mission: The American Immigration Council (formerly the American Immigration Law Foundation) was established in 1987 as an IRS designated 501(c)(3), tax-exempt, not-for-profit educational, charitable organization. Our mission is to strengthen America by honoring our immigrant history and shaping how Americans think about and act towards immigration now and in the future. The American Immigration Council exists to promote the prosperity and cultural richness of our diverse nation by: Educating citizens about the enduring contributions of America's immigrants; Standing up for sensible and humane immigration policies that reflect American values; Insisting that our immigration laws be enacted and implemented in a way that honors fundamental constitutional and human rights; Working tirelessly to achieve justice and fairness for immigrants under the law. The American Immigration Council believes that the dignity of the individual knows no boundary. Our nation's moral and ethical values must be reflected in the way we welcome immigrants.
Target demographics: Immigrants, newcomers, refugees
Geographic areas served: Nationwide
Programs: The American Immigration Council has four main program areas, the Legal Action Center, the Community Education Center, the Immigration Policy Center and the International Exchange Center. The Legal Action Center (LAC) of the American Immigration Council advocates for fundamental fairness in U.S. immigration law. To this end, the LAC engages in impact litigation and appears as amicus curiae (friend of the court) before administrative tribunals and federal courts in significant immigration cases on targeted legal issues. We also provide resources to lawyers litigating immigration cases and serve as a point of contact for lawyers conducting or contemplating immigration litigation. The LAC also works with other immigrants’ rights organizations and immigration attorneys across the United States to promote the just and fair administration of our immigration laws. The Community Education Center (CEC) strives to promote a better understanding of immigrants and immigration by providing educational resources that inspire thoughtful dialogue, creative teaching and critical thinking. Dedicated to the American values of fairness, social justice and respect for all people, the Center is committed to making immigration an “everybody issue.” The Center also highlights the positive contributions immigrants have made and continue to make to American society through its programmatic work. The Immigration Policy Center (IPC) is the research and policy arm of the American Immigration Council. IPC's mission is to shape a rational conversation on immigration and immigrant integration. Through its research and analysis, IPC provides policymakers, the media, and the general public with accurate information about the role of immigrants and immigration policy in U.S. society. IPC reports and materials are widely disseminated and relied upon by press and policy makers. IPC staff regularly serves as experts to leaders on Capitol Hill, opinion-makers and the media. IPC, formed in 2003 is a non-partisan organization that neither supports nor opposes any political party or candidate for office. The International Exchange Center (IEC) creates educational resources and opportunities that recognize our immigrant heritage. Dedicated to respecting, valuing, and celebrating cultural differences, the International Exchange Center programs create a synergy of the best ideas from many cultures for the benefit of all.

The American Immigration Council is well suited to achieve its mission to recognize the important role of immigrants in the development of the American experience and to further both respect for individual immigrants and the contribution immigrants make generally. The Council, and its various components are a strong voice for rational policy, providing thoughtful leadership and scholarship to the public debate on this critical issue. Immigration fosters a great deal of debate but often relies more upon prejudice than fact for analysis. The Council's Immigration Policy Center, and the scholars who provide the research and papers are a strong antidote to this misinformation. Other centers within the Council are well suited to provide high quality services to the American public, including education, exchange visitor sponsorship and legal analysis and advocacy.

I'm proud to be on the Board of AIC. Now more than ever, it is a go to organization, widely disseminating critical information that is used by a variety of different organizations and individuals across the United States. In particular, AIC has been so instrumental in broadcasting the benefits of immigration to this country, and showcasing the nuances that are sometimes lost in this era of 30 second soundbites and social media.

I have practiced immigration law for over 20 years. The more I came to understand the immigration system and politics, the more I realized that we needed a voice of reason to focus on the facts about immigration, educate people about immigration law and policy and litigate when necessary to assure due process for immigrants. I learned about AIC and realized that this was the voice I had been looking for. I have since helped promote AIC's program amoung immigration lawyers and the public, and now serve on AIC's board. I give my time and money to this organization because I believe the work AIC is doing is fundamental to assuring a just and workable immigration system. But even more, AIC helps safeguard the American identity as a nation of immigrants - and all that means to our society, economy and way of life.

With the deluge of federal agency memos, proposed regulations, public comments, policy changes, procedural changes, delayed effective dates, interim this and that, the American Immigration Council reviews and distills this overwhelming information and provides a clear, easily-read, easily-followed report. There's plenty of information out there. American Immigration Counsel analyzes that information and provided greatly needed clarity and guidance.

I am continually amazed at the innovative ways the AILA national office finds to educate and assist its members. They think, innovate and utilize the changing events in the immigration legal arena to ensure that its members are provided with the best tools to enhance their practices, thereby enabling the member attorneys to give excellent legal representation to their clients.

I remain inspired day-to-day over the 16 years I have been an attorney, the 3 years I was a law student and the several years I was a public sector employee before that by the dedication and detailed work of the America Immigration Council. I donate annually to this organization and my donations pale in comparison to their achievements that I feel guilty I cannot give more. These are cutting edge champions of human and civil rights beyond compare.
