Over the past 17 years, I have been affiliated with the Alzheimers Family Day Center (AFDC) as a sole caregiver for my aging mother who suffered from Alzheimers and then as a volunteer. While my mther was a participant, she received state-of-the-art care from an outstanding staff thoroughly trained in the field of dementia. She enjoyed participating in many activities that the Center offered. As the diease progressed and I could no longer care for my mother at home, I had to place her in a nursing home. The AFDC staff assisted me in researching and visiting nursing homes in the area which enabled me to make sure that my mother would receive outstanding care. During my mother's stay at AFDC, the staff also gave me great support in my caregiving duties. I have recommended the Center to friends who have aging parents or relatives who are suffering from this disease.

I have been affiliated with the Center for 16 years. First as a sole caregiver for my mother; and now as a volunteer. Without the services of the Center, I would have had to place my mother in a nursing home immediately. She participated in many activities and received excellent care during her tenure there. The staff was outstanding. In addition to working with my mother, they provided counseling and guidance for me. As the disease progressed and I could no longer care for her, they also assisted me in placing my mother in a nursing home. I could not have done this without their help. I highly recommend the Alzheimers Family Day Center to caregivers, families, and anyone who suffers from some form of dementia. I have also recommended the Center to friends who have aging parents suffering from dementia.

The Alzheimer's Family Day Center answers to many needs that families have, by providing creative caring day care, support groups for those with the disease and their family members, seminars for the the community to get comfortable with this "elephant in the room," and more. We in the care community rely on the outstanding AFDC staff members for state of the art guidance and ideas. I feel that the growing emergence of dementia and families needing support point to a need to relocate from an office building to a larger space with a garden, centrally located in Northern Virginia. When Alzheimer's strikes your family, as it did mine, we put our lives in the hands of the Alzheimer's Family Day Center.

AFDC is a life saver for families dealing with Alzheimer's disease in Northern Virginia -- devoted caring staff and tailored programming that keeps people with the disease active and engaged during the day, advice and support for families coping with the 24/7 challenges of care. It's a very special place full of very special people.

AFDC is one of Northern Virginia's finest Day Centers for Alzheimers. When my dad lived with us, I didn't know about AFDC. If I had, he would have been in the program. Now his illness has progressed to the level that he needs residential care. The staff at AFDC is fully engaged with the participants and the programs keep those in attendance engaged, active and challenged. The staff has a very accpeting and caring attitude at AFDC and you experience that when you are there. 5 Stars for the Alzheimer's Family Day Center. Dee Cascio

During the past two years I have been the full time caregiver of two elderly parents. My mother has Alzheimer. I participate in the support group for caregivers twice a month at the Family Day Center in Merrifield. This group led by Susan, Social Worker, has been lifesaving for me. I also participate in the many informational programs offered by the Alzheimer Family Day Center. My participation in the support group has given me strength and courage to do what I do for my parents. I am indebted the to AFDC!!

My husband has been going to the Alzheimer's Family Day Center for nearly two years. I am so glad I found this organization. The staff are very kind to clients and family. They go to great lengths to provide a positive and enriching environment for all levels of care. There ia always someone willing to listen if the caretaker needs to "unload." I highly recommended this organization.

The Alzheimer's Family Day Center has given us hope where non was to be found. My partner in life was diagnosed with moderate dementia. He has lost the ability to communicate effectively with the environment and as a result became angry, frustrated and depressed. The AFDC provides caring and loving environment, daily physical activities, music and movement sessions, healthy meal plan, and most importantly an emotionally appropriate environment where my spouse feel valued. The AFDC program director and social worker facilitate support groups for care takers, shared a list of county and local resources which are essential in order to address the legal, financial and logistical issues related to living with this disease. The AFDC has changed our lives and for that we are all eternally grateful.
