Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Congregate Meals, Food, Meals on Wheels, Nutrition

Mission: Alameda County Meals on Wheels' MISSION is to assist frail elders in maintaining their independence at home.

Alameda County Meals on Wheels' GOAL is to provide all eligible seniors with high quality, nutritious meals according to their needs, whether hot, frozen, cold, of ethnic origin or reflecting a special diet, prepared in Alameda County in a cost-effective manner, delivered by a caring driver and administered by local community-based organizations.

Target demographics: We deliver nutritious and delicious meals and perform safety checks on our homebound senior neighbors in Alameda County.

Direct beneficiaries per year: We feed 2,100 homebound seniors each delivery day.

Geographic areas served: Alameda County

Programs: Alameda County Meals on Wheels raises money to financially support Meals on Wheels (MOW) providers throughout the county. Incredible people like you participate in our annual Wheels for Meals Bike Ride each October, attend our elegant Taste culinary and auction event and donate throughout the year. $7 buys a meal (fresh ingredients, preparation, packing and delivery). $35 feeds a senior for a week. $140 feeds a senior for a month $1680 feeds a senior for a year. Many of our senior neighbors are vulnerable, recovering from hospital stays/surgeries/illness, frail and living with chronic conditions, have limited mobility or ability to daily tasks for themselves, have little to no local family or friends, and are low-income. Without our support, MOW programs couldn't feed 2,100 of our senior neighbors each delivery day. They'd be forced to cut services at a time when the need keeps growing!

ACMOW does amazing things with very limited staff time and budget. I am always amazed at what they can pull off. Executive Director Cindy Houts instituted a bike ride, which has grown to over 1,000 riders and volunteers in just three short years. This event has become a fundraising powerhouse, helping to feed hungry seniors in need. You just can't find a non-profit that does as much good in a person's life for just $6 a day.

As a dietitian whose program benefits directly from the efforts of ACMOW, we so appreciate the energy, enthusiasm and vision that this group embodies. They are tremendous cheerleaders for the Meals on Wheels programs in Alameda County, and the amount of money received from them keeps increasing. They are run efficiently and with great leadership, both from the ED and board.

Alameda County Meals on Wheels is a lean, well-run organization that uses it's fundraising capacity to help local agencies provide over 2,000 meals each week. In this time of severe cut backs, prepared, nutritious meals, delivered to the home, make a big difference in seniors' health and independence.
