This program is the real deal. As a teacher, I saw the most introverted children glowing with self-confidence and the rowdiest of bunches turn into the diligent students after just five weeks. These kids are so much fun to be around and it's amazing to watch them fulfill their potential to the fullest.

Aim High is a topic of conversation for me at least once a week. I was a Master Teacher at the SF Community site in San Francisco's Excelsior district. After applying for a teaching position online, I was approached by one of the site directors in a unique way - she called me for an interview and offered to meet at a cafe in my neighborhood. After I was hired, I started the week of Aim High training and felt like I was automatically part of a team. The staff took care of each other. Aim High took care of us. By the end of the intensive training week - I felt more ready for work than I ever have in the 2nd week of starting a job. I even felt excited to go to work every morning! The students took their studies seriously, which I did not expect. I think they take their studies seriously at Aim High because the curriculum is fun. I co-lead an elective called "San Francisco City Exploration" and was then able to build a better relationship with a lot of my students by exploring new places with them. The only complaint I have is that Aim High is only a summer program. I wish I could work there all year! I give Aim High 5 stars for multiple reasons: 1. The continuity of students and staff f 2. The curriculum and the evaluations of students and staff 3. The organization's great treatment of staff. Aim High promotes creativity, self-reflection and positivity by inspiring students to reach their goals.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

teaching as a Humanities "Master Teacher" and seeing the results of the student's experience academically, socially and artistically.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

establish more Aim High sites in Oakland.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

they have a mission to promote goal-setting and academic achievement to low-income middle school students.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

the nicest, most supportive and energetic group of youth workers and educators that I have ever known.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

grow larger, establishing more sites all over California, and paying the employees better!

Ways to make it better...

I could have continued working for Aim High during the school year.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

although I was a teacher at Aim High, I also learned from Aim High.

Before i was a volunteer, i was actually a student at Aim High. From my experiences, Aim High greatly prepared me for the following school year academically. To me, Aim High was my second home. I met a lot and a lot of friends. Aim High has also given me the opportunity to volunteer at the campus. Volunteering at Aim High trained my leadership skills as well as communication skills, which highly helped me at school. Thank You, Aim High!

My eigh grader girl had the best summer experience ever. Hoover Middle School counselor told me that AIM High was a great program. I agree. My girl was acepted the second time we apply. I recommended 100%. AIM curriculum is perfect designed to prepare the student for the transition from middle school to high school. When she started her first week of high school experience, whe was very relax and confident. I thank AIM High for such a wonderful job. I am very happy AIM High accepted my niece when she needed the most. Go AIm HIGH!

One thing I'd also say is that...

Kids and parents should fill the surveys that are send home at the end of the program. I think we should show our appreciation by filling out. Kids should be aware of the survey earlier on before the program ends.

This is the seventh summer that I have seen Aim High in action and their performance remains consistently strong. The combination of a well-structured academic program with the personal development focus of the "Issues & Cjoices" curriculum and the extracurricular/enrichment offerings makes for a program that really engages students and prepares them for success in school and in their personal lives. In addition, the fact that about one-third of the Aim High faculty are themselves graduates of the program provides credible and authentic role models for the students - I think this is an important contributor to Ain High's success. Overall, I think Aim High does a remarkable job of, as one graduate so eloquently put it, "convincing me that I had a right to an education, that I had the ability to succed academically and that I had a responsibility to myself, my family and my community to get an education".

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the hgih school graduation rates and college matriculation rates of the graduates and the commitment to the program of graduates who return in high numbers as teachers.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

be struggling with the same issues that leadership now faces - how to scale the organization without compromising quality of the program.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the leadership of the organization by experienced educators so that the program is thoughtfully designed and implemented.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

highly dedicated to the students and to their communities.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build organizational capacity to be able to serve more students during the summers and also to continue to support its graduates as they move through high school and into college.

Ways to make it better...

we had the resources to serve the qualified students (about 300) we had to turn away simply because of a lack of sufficient funds. We wouldn't need $10 million - anout $500,000 would have done the trick.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

(1) the need to raise about $2 million on an annual basis withourt any significant public funding and (2) the need to sustain the quality of the leadership team for another 24 years.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Aim High is a program that is highly scaleable and highly cost-effective that has a dramatically positive impact not only on its students but also on the underserved communities where it locates it summer sites.

I have a broad perspective on Aim High because I have served on the Board for about 5 years, two of my children have worked as teaching assistants in the summer, and a number of our employees' children have participated in the summer program. Aim High is an extraordinarily effective program that is meeting a critical and life-changing need (educational enhancement) for the most underserved members of our community. Aim High has demonstrated its success at providing the skills and motivation necessary for its students to graduate high school and matriculate at college. As one student put it: "Aim High is the place where I learned that I had a right to an education, I had the skills necessary to get an education and I had a responsibility to myself, my family and my community to get an education".

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the success of its graduates in high school and college and the enthusiasm and commitment of its graduates for the program as demeonstrated by their returning to teach in the program.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the professionalism and commitment of the Aim High staff which has resulted in the continuous expansion and improvement of the program.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

extraordinary. The administrative staff combines deep expertise in the needs of middle school children with unflagging enthusiasm for the program. Many of the volunteers are graduates or parents of graduates who think Aim High changed their lives.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand its program dramatically - immediately changing the lives of literally thousands of children - while ensuring that it had the resourses to maintain program excellence and ensure financial stability.

As an Aim High parent and volunteer, I have seen the direct short and long term results of this exemplary program for middle schoolers. Both my children are graduates of Aim High. My daughter has worked in the program as a teacher. Each summer Aim High provides academics, outdoor education, enrichment and fun! Aim High is truly diverse. It is an excellent program with excellent teachers. During the school year they provide tutoring and fun outings. And Aim High is FREE.

the number of children who can benefit from Aim High and the money it takes to provide services to them.

Aim High is an amazing, life altering experience. While I can only speak from the perspective of a teacher, I know from many first hands experiences that this feeling is expressed whole-heartedly by almost all teachers and students who go through the program. The five week intensive academic program has the summer school portion with classes in the morning and an activity period in the afternoon that fosters self expression, confidence, and making friendships. The atmosphere is filled with a strong sense of community and overall positive energy that is contagious, in a good way.

Aim High was founded in the summer of 1986 here at Lick-Wilmerding High School by two or our teachers, Alec Lee and Eleanor McBride. In partnership with a number of other private and public schools over the years, the original "class" of fifty students has today grown to over a thousand middle schoolers on twelve different campuses. If this organic growth is not sufficient testimony to the power of the Aim High "magic," the program's results are! Serviing a population of middle schoolers who would typically have a 25%-30% drop-out rate before completing high school, Aim High graduates have had a 95% high school completion rate and a 90% college-going rate over these twenty-three years! Aim High is also a valuable and effective teacher training ground, attested to by the fact that so many of Aim High graduates and assistant (high school and college students) teachers have become teachers. In my thirty-eight years in education and twenty-six years as a school head, I have never known an educational program that is more focused, strategic, effective and filled with heart than Aim High! All four of my children attended Aim High. The summer program helped raise their confidence level and self esteem. Allowing them to express themselves, without trepidation. They excelled academically. Each summer the program prepared them academically for the folling school year. They learned how to become aware of their community, ask questions and be compassionate towards others. They never wanted it to end! They talk about it all the time and look forward to returning as TA's. You won't find another program like Aim High in the city! The "Magic" does happen in each and everyone one!

I worked previously in an after-school program for middle schoolers, so I know what a great program can do. Aim High does an amazing job creating a culture that is fun and focused on learning. Teachers and students build relationships that will support and inspire students through high school and beyond. When I visited an Aim High campus for the first time, students wowed me articulate, detailed knowledge of their science projects, and the site directors deeply impressed me with their passion and expertise. As a staff member, I have to admit a certain bias, but - Aim High changes lives.
