Mission: The mission of Aim High is to inspire a life-long love of learning and to instill a sense of community, opportunity, and respect so that students are prepared for success in school and in life. Aim High changes the lives of under-resourced middle school students through an enriching, and academic summer experience that leads to success in high school and beyond. We intervene at a critical stage in students' lives with a free, multi-year summer program. Empowering youth in a supportive classroom environment transforms their attitudes toward learning and unleashes their potential. Our 15 campuses are located in Northern California, where we serve 1,700 students and employ 400 teachers. Our educators reflect the neighborhoods where our students live, and many alumni are inspired to return and work for Aim High. Aim High’s incubator role for innovative teaching techniques inspires new generations of teachers and provides access to real job training and job development. Aim High also provides summer employment opportunities and career development for teachers and teens, many of whom are Aim High alums.
Results: Through high-quality summer enrichment programs, Aim High has touched the lives of thousands of low-income youth in the Bay Area, and continues to employ a diverse group of teachers - 67% of whom are people of color. Aim High's impact is significant: 99% of students say they have an adult or teacher who cares about them 95% of students can imagine themselves as successful college students 79% of students improved their math skills (based on pre- and post-test scores) 87% of students tell us they were challenged at Aim High 90% of students report they are better prepared for the upcoming school year
Target demographics: Low-income Bay Area middle school youth.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 2014: 1,700 students at 15 campuses
Geographic areas served: San Francisco, Oakland, Redwood City, East Palo Alto, San Rafael, Marin City and Tahoe/Truckee, CA
Programs: Our summer program model aims to close the opportunity and achievement gaps for low-income middle school students by offering an engaging, supportive, and tuition-free summer learning program. The Aim High experience fosters critical thinking, instills academic habits, and cultivates a love of learning. Students participate in four rigorous academic classes in the mornings: Math, Science, Humanities and Issues & Choices. Aim High classes have a low student to teacher ratio, allowing for individual attention and a focus on project-based learning. In total, students receive over 60 hours of academic instruction over the course of the five-week program. In the afternoon, students participate in activities such as art, drama, and sports. Students typically participate for three or four summers, and many return to teach in the program. Aim High continually evaluates feedback, assesses results, and shares best practices in order to deliver a high-quality program.

All four of my children had the privilege of attending Aim High. Aim High puts "JOY" in learning! Is there anything else that's important?

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my children

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

grant it more funds

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

their dedication to the kids

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

great

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

change the look of education today

Ways to make it better...

there was more time

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

money

One thing I'd also say is that...

nothing

This was my son's first summer with the Aim High program. This was a good experience for him because it was a chance for him to learn without just sitting in a classroom for hours. Because there were many different activities, it made him look forward to going to the program everyday. Also, he will be able to receive help throughout his school year because the program is offering tutoring.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the commitment of the program to help my son do better academically

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

young, in touch, from same cultural background, different cultural backgrounds, happy to be there.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help so many kids that struggle and so many kids that don't struggle but lack the resources to stay on track.

I have attended Aim High graduations for the last five years. Each time I am moved by the students enthusiasm for their work and the connection they have with their teachers. The families come and support their children from all parts of the city. We need more Aim High's for future generations. Supporting our children keeping them creative and motivated. Thank you Aim High.

Aim High made me an educator and continues to strengthen my commitment to building learning communities where students and teachers can thrive together. In my work throughout the year I take guidance and inspiration from what I do in the summer with Aim High. Now I get to see my former students taking leadership roles on their Aim High campuses. I am yet to find another model of integrated professional and student learning that comes close to Aim High's excellent model of success! I love Aim High!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

it has allowed me to develop professionally.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

inspiring, playful, smart, and dedicated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

run a teacher credentialing program, and serve even more kids.

my experience from aim high was one of the best moments of my life. I appreciate all the teachers of aim high and especially those at lick wilmerding high school. LWAH is most definatly the best campus of all. Nate and Carrie are the best directors, always giving their time to make the kids time the best. When you are at aim high, the five weeks go by so fast and you will be so sad when its over but even more excited for the next summer.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

unbelievable to the nearest extent. the teachers were one of the best parts . THANKS TEACHERS ESPECIALLY LWAH TEACHERS!!!!!!!

My child has spent two summers at Aim High. Two awesome summers. She has opened up and made lots of new friends. She enjoys her learning experiences there. The Aim High staff really relate to the kids and make everything fun. It doesn't feel like a summer school program. We are so thrilled with Aim High, we are coming back next year with another child plus we are signing up for the afterschool tutoring they provide during the school year.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My child had a safe place to go in the summer. The program has helped her learn what she wants to do in life.

Aim High is a phenomenal program that has both helped me grow as an educator as well as helped thousands of students improve academically, giving them the fair shot at college that they may not have had otherwise. Seeing students develop and gain a level of respect for their academic endeavors is truly undiscribable.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

teaching there and developing bonds with students and staff centered around a positive learning environment.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase the scope of the organization, extending the amount of time in a session as well as the number of sites.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Growing close to a group of dedicated educators and being able to help these underprivileged students reach personal goals that they never knew that they had.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Dedicated and impassioned individuals committed to holistic learning who are happy to improve the state's educational situation one student at a time.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Open at least 50 new sites with ample funding for materials, site needs and staff and serve over 5,000 more students.

Ways to make it better...

This program was feasible for more than 5 weeks, the way it is now.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funding. There is no lack of students, nor is there a lack of quality teachers, it is only a matter of paying for it all.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Aim High is the single most rewarding thing I have been a part of in my lifetime.

This is a fantastic program which makes a real difference in the lives of the children it serves - showing them that school can be fun and helping them to believe in themselves. For example, one of my students came into the program, and on the first day, had a very negative attitude. He was joking about starting a fight in the program, and being disrespectful towards his peers and especially towards adults. He was on house arrest, and had been having lots of conflicts in school. However, through the empowerment of the activities period, sports, and success/fun in the classroom, he TRANSFORMED! By the last day, he was a leader among the other kids, encouraging them to do well and supporting them with his enthusiasm and positive comments towards them. During sports he celebrated when his teammates did well, and encouraged them when they faltered. He was proud of the artwork he had produced, and seemed to take pride in bringing the younger students towards a better perspective. He participated actively in class, and started thinking more about life after high school and the possibilities that could be available to him. This student was just one of many who transformed over the course of the program.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Forging relationships with the youth and watching them become more positive, enthusiastic, and hopeful about their personal and academic endeavors.
