I came to Aim High as a freshman in college, looking for experience in the education field to see if I truly wanted to become a teacher. I have since been teaching for this nonprofit for the past three years. It is frantic, hectic, and sometimes downright frustrating, but I have learned so much about being an educator and being true to myself while being a part of this program that it really has become a mainstay in my life. I am truly grateful for the opportunities that this program has provided for me and the kids who have benefited from it.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my professional development as an educator, learning what works and what does not in a classroom.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

maybe start providing grades for the students.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

being able to be myself in front of my students.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

priceless, giving, selfless, and dedicated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

change the face of education, making it more relevant and engaging for students.

Ways to make it better...

I had had more time to prepare lessons.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

time constraints, in terms of planning and academic instruction.

I have been an Intern at Aim High for 4 summers. I have helped Master Teachers and led my own Math and Humanities class. These summers have been, by far, the most enjoyable and rewarding of my life. I have connected with students, hopefully inspiring them to take their educations seriously and to enjoy learning. Ever year I look forward to going back to Aim High and seeing all my old students and the excited new students. When I see my students come back to the program to be TAs, I know that Aim High is doing something fantastic.

The Great!

I came to Aim High two summers ago looking for a teaching job to supplement my graduate research work... and found a whole new inspiration for my career. Teaching these kids to love learning during such a critical time in their lives is essential to improving both the quality of their lives as well as the quality of our society. Aim High inspires, educates, enriches and transforms not just their students, but also their teachers.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

working directly with graduates of Aim High in my classroom. One of my teaching assistants started Aim High as a troublemaker and a flirt who could care less about school, and returned after graduating to voluntarily spend his summer teaching!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

change education as we know it.

I have had two incredible summers. The program is new in the South Bay but growing. Families are incredibly enthusiastic and supportive and the students are thriving in the program. Some of the students did not want to go home at the end of the day! The love and passion and dedication the teachers have day in and day out throughout the program is exemplary of what teaching and learning can be.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My own gratification and from the achievement of the students, particularly in math where progress is assessed.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The encouragement and freedom to grow professionally and create new systems that work on the ground with particular sites.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Energetic, enthusiastic, passionate about education.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Scale its model nationally, maybe even globally and raise both academic achievement as well as fulfill social-emotional needs for many more youth in need.

My husband insisted that our daughter go to a summer program he heard of called "Aim High." Our daughter said it was the best program she had ever gone to. I became a volunteer, my husband joined the board, my daughter graduated and my son began. My daughter became a volunteer, then a staff member. She wrote her college essay about Aim High. She is now a college graduate working at the Boys and Girls club. My husband continues on the board and I continue as a volunteer. We are an Aim High family.

The Great!

I am the parent of two Aim High alums. My elder student started Aim High in the summer of 2006 and the younger, the following year.
