I have been a part of the Aim High family for seven years now. I graduated from the program after being a student for three consecutive summers and this past summer was my 4th time teaching. I can honestly say that I love Aim High. I wholeheartedly support the program and believe that it is an essential resource for underserved kids in communities throughout the Bay Area. Every student gets an equal amount of attention and support. This is made a lot easier by having small classes consisting of 10-15 students with 2 or 3 teachers per classroom as opposed a typical class of ~30 students. From my personal experience, as a former student and as a staff member, kids progress much further when there is more one-on-one interaction between the teacher and the student. One of our goals is to get kids out of their comfort zones to broaden their horizons. Every summer, we get a handful of really shy, quiet kids. By the end of the 5-week program, through lots of encouragement, out-of-class conversations, and even some playful pestering, most, if not all, of them are proactive in the classroom and outside on the yard. There's so much more I can say about Aim High and all the great times I've had in the program, but you have to witness the Aim High magic for yourself to truly understand how wonderful it is.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing the number of students who return every summer until they graduate. Many of those graduates even show interest in returning as a staff member in the following summers.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

organize more events outside of summer just to give the Aim High students a little break from their normal school routines and to meet with friends they only see during the summer.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

having fun with the kids inside and outside the classroom. I had a ton of fun when I was a student in the program and I just want today's middle school kids to have that same experience.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

and are completely amazing. Some of the staff members were with me in the program when I was a student and some of them were my students when I taught during the past few summers. Everyone wants to be there to educate and empower the youth.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

open up more campuses throughout the Bay Area because there are hundreds, maybe even over a thousand, kids on the waiting list every year. Also employ more staff members to give even more one-on-one attention to the students. It used to be 3 per class.

Ways to make it better...

we didn't have a few rotten apples every summer, but that's part of the learning experience for me as a staff member.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

a lack of budget and the mayor's lunch program.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I'd like to return every summer and I hope that Aim High can continue to expand and offer it's opportunities to the kids in the Bay Area, and hopefully across the United States some day.

For the last five years I have been personally involved with the program. My brother and I have both gone through the program and loved it. Before this program I was not someone who would take chances, try new things, and believe that I could literally aim high. Once I finished the program I had made long lasting friends, I know that as a minority I can still aim high and love academics, my grades and my engagement in class has improved, and I am willing to take on any challenges and take risks. I will make a speech in front of a crowd or perform, because of my experience at Aim High. Every year I will help out Aim High with recruiting kids or help out at fundraisers because of my experience. My brother and I have gone back to volunteer and work with these students to make a difference in their lives as those T.A.s and teachers have made a difference in ours.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

professional in the sense that even though not all them were not yet college graduates, they used their knowledge and taught students what they needed. All of their class activities engaged these students.

Ways to make it better...

Due to monetary restraints SFSU was closed this pass summer which is sad because a large campus can be overwhelming for a fresh man college student but if they learn thier way around when younger thier confidence will be more intune with thier education

I've visited 2 campuses and have been very impressed by their results. A student who went through the program told me it inspired her to make the most of school. Before her Aim High summer experience school was drudgery, and she kept her head down low and just tried to get through the days. Now she wants to be a teacher. The attention and care the teachers give the students make them realize that they are valuable and their thoughts are important. This is a great organization that meets some of the needs of the lesser advantaged middle school students.

As a high school student looking for volunteer work, I had no expectations when I began working with Aim High. But after three summers as a teaching assistant in the program, I have become more and more amazed each year with the incredible boost (educationally, socially, and personally) the program provides to middle school students. It also manages the impossible by acting as a positive program-wide role model to kids who are facing the toughest social environment of their lives. I'm proud to have worked with Aim High, and I have every intention of continuing to work in the program for many years to come.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

having close friends in high school who had gone through the program, had enjoyed happy, successful high school years, and are either currently or in the near future attending college.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand to encompass all of california and beyond, providing a great, supportive, free summer program to thousands more struggling middle school students.

Aim High was my first experience teaching at age 16 in 1993. I am still teaching today 17 years later! I cannot express my gratitude for those first five summers and how they shaped me as an educator. It a place where the teacher and the learner are co-creators. Aim High is a program that should be emulated over and over again across the country.

My son attended Aim High the past two summer and absolutely loved it. Now that is a miracle statement coming from my son! He hates summer school because "it just does not make sense to go to school during the summer"! During Aim High he jumped out of bed to get there early and came home excited to talk about what they did and the friends he made. He can not wait for next summer and has already mention going back as a volunteer when he is old enough! Thank you Aim High for showing my son that learning can be fun!

The dedication I see in this program is amazing. To hear the students tell their story is to believe. What most impresses me is that they are able to help so many students in such a cost effective way. I only wish more programs generated such strong human and financial returns.
