I would first like to say that I wish there were more organizations like this and more individuals in today's society that were like Mr. & Mrs. Adams. What a blessing they are to the community, children, parents and everyone they meet. They have the biggest hearts and are so dedicated to the education of children. They have been working with my daughter for the past twelve years and with me being a single parent, this meant so much to me. Due to their love, support and dedication to her education, she not only entered kindergarten knowing how to read an write (colors, numbers, shapes, sounds, etc.) but has been on the honor roll ever since. She will be finishing seventh grade in June. What an inspiration they have been to myself and my child. They are true angels on earth.
The Great!

I would change absolutely nothing to this organization.
Mrs. Adams, Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. You've had a great influence on Ginny, she loved coming to your class every morning, even when grandparents were visiting. I'll miss seeing you every day but look forward to Jane being in your class. With great respect, Jamie!

I could have taken Mrs. home with me :)
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
the growing number of students needing literacy skills.
One thing I'd also say is that...
it takes a special kind of person to teach 4 and 5 year olds, and Mrs. is that special kind!

Mrs. Adams, I would just like to say that I am ever so thankful that my baby Jaybriel had the chance to have you as a teacher. She has learned so much in the past year and I have noticed a big change in her behavior. I am confident that she will do very good and make it through her first year in "Big Girl" school. Thank you so much for all that you do. God Bless Danielle Person

I am a single parent, mother of three young girls living in La Crosse, WI. Reading is very important to me and my girls. We do not have transportation and sometimes can't returns books we checkout from the library on time. This caused us to have overdue fees. I couldn't pay the fees, so we did without books for a long while. Then one day my oldest daughter's friend told us the library paid her overdue fees. We ran down to the library and it was true! I had to know about the program and was told it was because of the African American Mutual Assistance Network, Inc. special grant. God Bless AAMAN!
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the community and in the lives of many of my friends.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
provide grants for overdue fees to areas where low-income families live.
More feedback...
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
being able to continue to assist my girls with their reading.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
helpful, kind and didn't judge me. I haven't met any staff of AAMAN, I guess the people at the library are connected with AAMAN and they were wonderful.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
establish their overdue fees grant nationwide.
Ways to make it better...
I had known of the library grant for overdue fees a lot sooner.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
having enough money to continue providing the grant.
One thing I'd also say is that...
we need more community non-profits like AAMAN doing something for the community and not just having fundraisers for their self.

As a young boy of 17 I knew it all. I had all the answers. The world revolved around me, until I met Mr. Cecil! Mr. Cecil, I thought was about 35 or so I didn't know when I met him he was 60-years old. He had his own business so I felt I could easily run my game on him; little did I know. Mr. Cecil asked me one question, "where do I see myself in 5-years?" I knew this was my opportunity to plant my seed. I answered, "owning my own business." That lead to a list of questions from Mr. Cecil I couldn't answer. Before I know it, I found myself interested in business. Mr. Cecil's game was stronger and he had more experience. Now as a young man at age 25, with the help of AAMAN, I now own my own Hip Hop Clothing Store.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the lives and education of the minority families in the community. Winona isn't the most inclusive town for blacks. The Hmong have Project Fine and the International students have three higher education institutions. The blacks have AAMAN, WITH NO SUPPORT
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
establish a permanent locations in the tri-state area in order to set office hours; make access more convenient.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
learning to take responsibility for my actions. Mrs. Adams' loving care and ability to teach my little 3-year old brother to read. I enjoy knowing my sister will be attend AAMAN's Next Step program in March 2010. Even my mother is encouraged!
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
just as excited about AAMAN as I. All the staff and volunteers were served by AAMAN at one time or another.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
establish AAMAN Community Centers throughout the tri-state region. Hire minorities to create a more diverse community and provide minority services such as a black-owned barber and beauty shops.
Ways to make it better...
the community wasn't so racist towards blacks. If the community leaders would reach out to AAMAN and begin an open dialog to truly confront personal issues and concerns. Hired personal with the city and higher education can't afford to speak the truth.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
the racist people in the community and the city leaders acting concerned and involved by participating in the local college and universities ethnic programs and events.
One thing I'd also say is that...
Mr. Cecil is AAMAN and having a Black-owned non-profit in this region is needed and well worth the community's personal and financial support.

It is with a life long commitment to learners and a strong call to advocacy of people in low-income families that I wish to serve Camp AAMAN by sponsoring a child to attend Camp AAMAN. The African-American Mutual Assistance Network is addressing the need of communities that are lacking programs that assist low-income households during a most vulnerable time for kids (Summer). Providing a safe and fun learning environment at little or no cost to these low-income parents to send their children to a day camp is a service worth supporting.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the local newspapers expressing the need of their unique youth services.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
purchase 50 acres of land with a creek and lots of trees for the kids to enjoy while camping. Cover the cost of every child attending the Camp and provide an excellent education and training program for the parents as well.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the professional Certificate I received of the child I sponsored. Little Caleb is a handsome young boy sharing his likes and dislikes and thanking me for his sponsorship.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
experienced and excited about the Camp and very understanding about the parent's situation.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
find a better camping location and environment.
Ways to make it better...
I had more time to call-to-action my colleagues in supporting and sponsoring kids-to-camp.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
finding a better camping location and environment.
One thing I'd also say is that...
Camp AAMAN is the best!

I must thank Mrs. Adams for her guidance throughout the past 2-yeas working with Alana. Her personal and academic growth has been tremendous this past year thanks to your endless patience and support. Your Literacy Program should be awarded! Always, Mat & Kristen O'Brien

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
their approach to early childhood education.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
professional, knowledgeable, patient and caring.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
establish their Literacy Program throughout the Nation, train and hire hundreds of teachers and assistants.
Ways to make it better...
I had known about AAMAN's Literacy Program sooner.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
securing funding for hiring enough staff to teach their unique Literacy Program. Since we placed our child in the program, the numbers has increased from 9 kids to over 100.
One thing I'd also say is that...
AAMAN's Clara Fields Multicultural Literacy Program truly take into account the child's background knowledge when teaching.
