ADOPT A PLATOON

I was looking for a functional way to support our troops and stumbled upon Adopt A Platoon. I've been able to let an individual service member know that he is cared about, and that people do appreciate what he is doing. Because it is one-on-one I am getting to know him as a person and not just some faceless soldier thousands of miles away. I can send goodies that he can't get there so he has some of the comforts of home. This has been the most rewarding experience!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
I know I am truly making a difference in the lives of these soldiers.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
totally change the morale of the armed forces. These soldiers get supplies they need, reassurance they haven't been forgotten, and a link to the world they are fighting for. If money were no object, every soldier abroad could feel that support.

It is hard to imagine that a simple handwritten letter from a "stranger" could make two people come to tears. In the middle of a war, our soldier wrote to us and sent us the gift of a tape and a booklet on living a happy life! We are grateful for the priviledge of supporting this young man who gained his citizenship while serving in Iraq! He signed his letter. "We are family now--Love from your adopted soldier"

They gave me age appropriate soldiers. And it seemed like we really were connecting. I will be supporting our troops for as long as I possibly can. I live in a high military area and I love to have ways to support the soldiers. This organization is great about giving you all of the information necessary to make your communications amazing!
The Great!

I'm tremendously grateful for AdoptaPlatoon -- it's filled a desire I had to be able to lend support to our deployed military men and women ... to be able to "thank you" for the countless sacrifices they make on behalf of our country and me and my family. And from their cards and letters to me, I know that AdoptaPlatoon is a very important part of their support system -- most especially through these very long deployments. As far as the organization itself, in my nearly 5 years of involvement, I think it's terrifically well run. I don't know how the main staff evolved, but these are volunteers and they do an outstanding job.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
The cards and letters I get back from our troops -- that I've helped make Christmas special for troops working in the ICU or letting units braving mountain winters and desert summers know that they're remembered and appreciated.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
try to take a nap -- haha!! I know our beloved founder and her Board of Directors all give 110%. And honestly, there's not a thing I know of that I would change about what they do or how things are run.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Knowing that the bit of support I lend our troops really does help -- whether it's a package of goodies or just a letter. Sometimes a soldier will write that my AdoptaPlatoon birthday card was the only card he received.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
like family and very capable and professional ...in volunteer jobs. It's a terrific group.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
obviously, do even more for our beloved military.
Ways to make it better...
I had heard of AdoptaPlatoon earlier. I discovered AAP listening to a radio program in 2004; for sometime, I'd been wishing I had a conduit to express my appreciation to our troops who give so very much to all of us; but didn't know how to get involved
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Currently the economy has to be the biggest challenge because that impacts what individual volunteers can do as well as outside donations. So we try to do more with less.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I encourage EVERYONE reading this to sign on with AdoptaPlatoon today. And, at a minimum, please take a few minutes and write a little note to "Dear Military Man or Woman" and mail it to AdoptaPlatoon to send out -- it'll mean so much!

No matter how long I work with Adopt a Platoon, it will never be long enough!!For as long as there are men and women fighting and standing strong so that I can live in freedom and without fear...that is how long I will volunteer for this group. I have met friends whom I will hold dear for life. I have met unnamed soldiers who will never again be strangers. I have met countless interested parties who ask me, "What do you do?" It is always with pride that I say, "I work for Adopt a Platoon.... here's my card." For all that Adopt a Platoon has taught me, the greatest lesson of all has been this: There is no small purpose in life, as long as that purpose makes bigger the life of another. Thank you Adopt a Platoon!!!!
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
My sense of personal purpose. The lives of soldiers whom I've adopted. The feedback of individuals, troops and squadrons who have benefited from the selfless time and money dedicated to supporting them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
step carefully in the footsteps of the wonderful women who have led me down this journey. No complaints whatsoever.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The support and friendships I have developed with relative strangers, simply because we have a common goal. It's awesome!
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Aware. Kind. Patient. Understanding. Serious. Playful. Creative. Introspective. Selfless. Unwavering. Teachable. Tough. Compassionate. Dedicated. Flexible. They care as much about one another as they do the cause to which their lives are dedicated.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Hire full-time professionals in order to take the pressure and the load off of those who often have so many irons in the fire that everything is hot.
Ways to make it better...
More people were aware of the needs of our men and women serving in our military. Only time and outreach can achieve this goal. The women and men who are at the head of this lovely beast are doing a wonderful job and I am proud to play even a small part.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Communicating over the far stretches of the Unites States. Organizing the many fingers involved in reaching out a hand. Gaining the widespread support needed to fulfill the needs of our military.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I am proud to work with Adopt a Platoon and I am even prouder to know the sincere folks who have dedicated their time, money and lives to this worthy cause. I can only hope to be them one day.

I am so lucky and honored to be able to provide support to our deployed troops through this wonderful organization. AdoptAPlatoon is all about our supporting the U.S. military. The organizers and volunteers give 110% to make sure that each deployed Soldier, Airman, Marine and Seaman gets support from home. There are not enough good words to describe this organization!
The Great!

Adoptaplatoon has increased soldier support every year since 2005. In 2008 the organization spent $ 970,000 on soldier support and will spend over $ 1,000,000 on soldier in 2009.
