It's long overdue that an organization such as this one has started to represent people who are all too often under served and under represented. Rather than give the state large sums of money, year after year, only to see them mismanage it, resulting in waiting lists, it would be better to allow beneficiaries to self-direct their own care. People living with HIV/AIDS are far more aware of their own needs and arguably would do a better job of obtaining services and support that would allow them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. All too often, the views of the beneficiary are overlooked and this organization has demonstrated, in a short period of time, its ability to put the ADAP recipients first!

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming!
Ways to make it better!
  • One thing I'd also say is that... I've attended several events sponsored by the organization and have been extremely impressed.

This organization has good goals, but sometimes is over zealous in promoting them. They continue to say that people died while on waiting lists when the truth is that the people who died were actually getting their drugs from patient assistance programs, but had unfortunately run out of options for a regimen that would work for them. The organization has implied at times that the ADAPs are not doing their best to serve patients, when the opposite is indeed the truth. The ADAP Directors in this nation are excellent advocates for patients in their states. When advocacy groups want to help the cause, it would be more helpful to work with the ADAP Directors to see how they can improve the services of a state ADAP. It is best to retain credibility and speak only the facts than to over exagggerate and lose a powerful voice

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... dedicated volunteers
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... getting to know passionate people
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... carefully screen activities, conferences and official statements

aaa+ is a very important voice in expanding access to care and treatment for HIV positive people in the United States. At a time when the focus has shifted to global AIDS, I have attended some of the critical events that aaa+ has organized, and I have found them very helpful in understanding not only how this problem affects people living with HIV, but especially how our organizations can work together to effect real change. I look forward to events that aaa+ will put on in the future and I hope that their efforts in this field will continue to make waves in the HIV community.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... a number events and strategy sessions and their professionals provide a salient voice in progressive steps forward.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... their ability to address the core issues concerning people living with HIV.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... very well versed on the problems that have built up and the solutions that are necessary to fix the inadequacies of HIV health care coverage.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... effectively reignite the awareness of the HIV epidemic in this country and help organize the many problems that the federal and state governments have in coordinating ADAPs.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the fading attention to people living with HIV in this country and the programs that assist the quality and longevity of life for HIV patients.

The ADAP ADVOCACY ASSOCIATION (aaa+) is a group of HIV/AIDS ADAP advocates that are sincere and whole heartedly immersed in the HIV health care access as well as the HIV-related disability issues. The fact that some of the board members as well as the CEO are struggling with this disease and its problems on a daily basis gives this organization a personal perspective, a deep seated understanding, and an ever-flowing impetus to be true and staunch advocates for those who are less fortunate. Moreover, the fact that the all volunteer board members come from different walks of life, professions, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and political affiliation, enriches aaa+ multi-dimensional advocacy and makes it more of a true representation of the people living with HIV/AIDS. AAA+ is the honest and unwavering voice for the AIDS/HIV+.

This organization is the ONLY national HIV/AIDS organization fighting to improve the AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs). ADAPs provide life-saving medications to people living with HIV/AIDS who have little, or no insurance. Believe it or not, but there have actually been national waiting lists to access this important program due to insufficient federal funding, and in some cases people have actually died waiting for their medications. So while we fight to provide low-cost medications to those suffering from HIV/AIDS in foreign countries (which we should be doing), we're letting Americans die waiting! The ADAP Advocacy Association is simple terms is fighting for those who cannot fight themselves.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... Helping to promote self-advocates nationwide, who can contact Members of Congress to talk about their personal stories.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... It is a true grassroots organization, operating from the bottom up and not the top down.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... The organization is governed by a dedicated, diverse volunteer board of directors. The association will benefit from the combined experience of three HIV-positive members, one ADAP recipient, one physician, one attorney, four influential AIDS community leaders and two lifelong disability rights champions.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Rather than talk about what our organization could do with $10 million, it seems more appropriate what type of care could be provided if the federal government appropriated an additional $138 million. There would be no more waiting lists for life-saving medications. Americans living with HIV/AIDS would not die waiting for their medications. And people living with this disease could live happier, healthier and more productive lives.
