I have been personally involved with ACTS as a donor and volunteer for over ten years. My experience says this is a top flight, charitable organization that offers a broad array of serices; homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and programs, suicide prevention programs, emergency assistance services, and a food pantry. ACTS has a remarkable reputation in our community and receives financial support from a diverse base, including grants, churches, private and corporate donations, and even some limited public funds. It is a great organization, doing great things!

The most memorable event occurred when I was collecting donated food at a local grocery store and one of the manager's approached me and asked if I was from ACTS. When I told him I was, he gave some extra food and explained that when he was out of work several years earlier ACTS had helped him and now he was happy to give back and hopefully help someone else as ACTS had helped him. Over the years, I have experienced tremendous joy watching people come to ACTS and obtain the asistance they need.

I was able to work with ACTS days before Christmas 2010. My daughter-in-law, grandchildren and I went to the family shelter and made some beaded jewelry with the children and mothers that were spending Christmas at the shelter. The excitement in those children's eyes was a great gift to me. ACTS provides a great service to families who are suffering hard times and need a little lift to keep things together. We are grateful such services are provided. Who knows when WE may need them. I know they made Christmas a lot brighter this year.

I have lived in Prince William County for most of my life and since I was a young girl in Girl Scouts, I have been aware of the good works that Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) does in my community. As a girl, I helped with food drives and as an adult, we donate all of our children's clothes and books that they have outgrown, as well as any other household items we can no longer use. We love the fact that our donations are either given to our neighbors in need in the community, or sold in the Thrift Store to help with the day t0 day operations of the organization. And now, my own children see how ACTS helps our community every holiday season when they take canned goods to their school for the annual food drive.

We first became aware of ACTS through our church when we moved to Prince William County, VA. We were young with young children and not much money to spare, so we donated to the thrift stores and food drives. Realizing that we were alleviating the hunger and suffering of our own neighbors, as opposed to the poor in general, we eventually made ACTS one of our permanent/monthly charitable contributions. It is satisfying and reassuring to "help at home". As our exposure to the many programs and volunteers grew, we were and are routinely impressed with the dignity with which the "clients" are afforded as well as the actual aid. Our family could not be more satisfied with the results of our contributions.

At the ACTS thrift store, both the customers and the donors are treated with respect and dignity. Always a sincere gratitude expressed for the donations that I would PAY them to take!!!

Personally, I do not have the experience or full knowledge of all of ACTS programs, so I could not make a suggestion as to overall improvements. My experience with the thrift store shows it to be professional, clean, organized and respectful. The food bank feeds so many...more than I thought possible. Impressive.

We sometimes forget , in an area where money and politics reign, that that there are people who need help with the basics of life, food, shelter, and transportation. ACTS is actively helping these people and all donations are used for this purpose with as little overhead as possible.

I
wish I could do more!

I have been affiliated with ACTS and its good works for over 20 years. I initially worked with ACTS as a church delegate from my parish church. Then over 19 years ago i was elected to the Board of Directors and have served there ever since. Over this time period i have served on various committees and task forces for the organization. I am currently serving on the Finance and Personnel committees.
One may ask why i would remain on the Boars of such an organization for this length of time. I strongly believe in the mission of ACTS and the service it provides my community. As a member of the Finance Committee accept the challenge of overseeing the management of the Agency's funds and stewardship of all of it valuable resources.

I see monthly the results of ACTS through the reporting tools they have in place that are reviewed by the Board.

Any changes that I would recommend is dependent upon the availability of additions funds. I would like to see the ability for the Agency to provide more assistance to those of our community that are in need of food and shelter.

My husband has been involved with ACTS for many years, but he and I have only been married for four years and I came from the west coast to Virginia, so I knew nothing of this organization before arriving. Paul suggested that if I was ever looking for a volunteer service opportunity that ACTS could fix me up very quickly and would provide all the training I would need to do a good job. He was so right. I worked for about six months in the food pantry on the busiest day of the week. Quite often we would see as many as 60 families during my four hour shift. The work was so rewarding, and the people were so appreciative of the help that I really felt like I was making a difference. Recently I have had to take time off to deal with a slipped disc, but when that gets fixed, I'll be back. I truly enjoyed working with dedicated volunteers and those who came because they were court ordered to do community service. Regardless of why they were there, almost everybody rapidly understood their importance to the team effort, and our productivity was really amazing. Sharen Moessner

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

This non-profit is truly dedicated to its mission of ending hunger, homelessness and domestic violence. So little is spent on overhead that I wonder how they can keep operating as effectively as they do.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Staff and volunteers here are so unselfish and caring that it really makes you feel humble and wishing you could do more to help.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

ACTS could pay off their modest mortgage debt ($400K) and could replace its ancient shelter with a new one, about a $600K project. The rest would go into their Futures Fund to be ready to respond to community needs and staff salary increases.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
