ACTS continues to grow in programmatic reach and staff professionalism. As a Board member, I have never been more proud of our staff's ability to analize the needs of the community and to search for ways to meet those needs with compassion and programmatic approaches that make a real difference. 2011 was a very challenging year with lots more people coming for food...we even had to close the emergency food pantry for a short period while we appealed to the broader community for assistance in restocking. It was a wonderful thing to see how those who had extra shared with those who had nothing. In many ways that experience encapsulates 42 years of what ACTS has meant to the Greater Prince William area. We are now streatching our horizons as we work in collaboration with our community college and hospital to bring expanded job opportunities to those who are trying to break the poverty cycle. Just another example of the green edge of creativity being alive and well at ACTS.

I have been affiliated with ACTS in one capacity or another for thirty years. My family moved to Virginia courtesy of service in the U.S. Navy in 1981 and almost immediately became members of ACTS and volunteers as a function of our church's connection to the organization. I currently serve on the ACTS Board of Directors and am engaged with the Fund Raising and Long-Term Development Committees.

For forty-two years ACTS has served the needs of those in our community whose lives are in crisis. The ACTS charter calls for us to serve the residents of Greater Prince William County, Virginia, which includes the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. That narrowly focused service area allows us to provide very concentrated and carefully monitored services with a high degree of attention to getting the job done correctly and with close public scrutiny regarding attention to quality control. But that narrow focus on a population totalling just over 450,000 and an area of roughly 400 square miles also means that our fund raising territory is quite restricted. While we have occasionally been awarded funding support for our services from national-level sources, the overwhelming majority of our operating funds come from our Prince WIlliam neighbors. Throughout the current recession, our funding has remained stable even beyond our fondest hopes. But the needs for services continue to climb, and there are times when when have to say the hard words, "I'm sorry, we can't help." We do our very best not to say those words, but we are stretched as thin as we have ever been. If ACTS is chosen as a recipient of the $5,000 award, I can assure you that not a nickle of that money will be wasted. If we are nothing else, we are great stewards of the resources we have been blessed to receive.

I am truly thankful that we found ACTS early-on in our military service in the Washington area. It has provided such a rich and rewarding opportunity to give back to the community.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have been a part of this organization's service provision to those in need of food assistance, escape from domestic violence and search for affordable child care and housing, and I know from first hand experience that what we do makes a life-saving difference in more than 30,000 lives each year.

...work to build a future funding base that was solid and dependable regardless of the prevailing economy. And, in fact, that is what I am working on through the development and marketing of our Futures Fund and the work of our Long-term Development Committee.

I have donated thousands of dollars to this fine organization for over the past 20 years and know the current Director and all of the past 4 Directors over that time. They are a very frugal, well run, run organization helping the very needy and desperate in the community. They have strong board members who are intimately involved in every aspect of the business.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have more support from the smaller, start-up organizations who mean well but are not equipped to provide services for the needy. They initially takes scarce community resources from ACTS as they begin their own programs only to have them frequently disappear as the person who is leading their effort has a decrease in enthusiasm or their task becomes too burdensome.

I referred a friend recently who has never had to ask for any help. His wife lost her job and money has been tight. His intake was done very professionally and he has been able to receive food once a month from the food bank. I feel very confident that ACTS helps people in need in Woodbridge

I started volunteering with ACTS more than 30 years ago when they needed drivers to pickup women and children and drive them to safe houses. Today I pickup and deliver food to the ACTS food pantry and am a telephone volunteer twice a month with the Sexual Assault Victims Advocacy Service (SAVAS) and ACTS Turning Points collaboration. It is a privilege to be associated with ACTS and your wonderful caring staff. I pray that everyone in all Prince William County jurisdictions will have the same wonderful opportunity to experience the peace, joy and happiness that comes from helping others in our community.

Thank you ACTS. Your opportunities help to make me a better person.

My family first moved to Prince William County in 1990, and after many overseas military assignments, we were eager to feel part of a real community. Volunteering for ACTS, through our church, was one way to become involved at a grassroots level. We have become regular donors to ACTS, because we have seen first hand the commitment and dedication of the staff, the real needs that are met through domestic violence programs, the food pantry, helpline, shelter, and other assistance programs, and the efficiency with which services are provided. We know that our donations are being put to work to assist our neighbors in need.

ACTS needs a reliable funding stream to plan for the future and focus on doing what the organization does best--helping our county's needy citizens.

Our church has been involved and help supports ACTS in many ways over the years. Acts works and provides a strong vehicle for concerned residents and greatly contributes to the betterment of those less fortunate. Without ACTS involvement some of the services would not be provided to the residents of Prince William County. ACTS is a catalyst of bringing residents together for a common good.

The needs within our community would not be met without the work of this wonderful organization. They provide basic goods and services to a population that is struggling to meet the basic needs of their families. ACTS is there when a family suddenly finds themselves without a home. ACTS is there when someone has been abused and needs a safe place to go. ACTS is there when an individual is feeling suicidal and needs a compassionate listener. ACTS is there for the family who has no money to put food on the table and the next check is two weeks away. ACTS is there to provide child care for low income families so that parents can work and know that their children are in a safe a loving enviornment. ACTS is there... whenever there is a need. Your $5000 donation would allow these types of life-altering works to continue.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

It is humbling to witness the fear and anxiety on the faces of of those in crisis when they walk in the door of the food bank or the emergency shelter. Through the kindness of those that work at ACTS and through the generosity of those that donate resources, those looks change into relief and hope.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would love to see ACTS open a soup kitchen and be able to provide a hot meal several days a week.

It is an honor to be able to be a member of the Board for ACTs. Through my church, I have worked with the homeless and those that are living on the fringe for over 15 years. Long before joining the Board, I watched as this group of dedicated staff and volunteers were able to make a difference in the lives of members of our community. In tough economic times like we have experienced the last couple of years, you need organizations that effectively use the resources that it receives. ACTS works diligentily to try to get the most out of each donation and/or gift. Again it is a joy to be associated with such an organization.

I first became involved with ACTS in about 1990 as Lake Ridge Baptist's representative at ACTS meetings. It was there that I became familiar with the different ways ACTS serves our community. My invovement grew as I saw first hand the wonderful things they were doing in our community. Upon my retirement I was able to have time to work shoulder to shoulder with the terrific ACTS staff in the Emergency Assistance office. I am always impressed with their patience, and with the dignity and respect they give all clients who walk through their doors.

As a long-time donor to and volunteer for ACTS, I continue to be happy and impressed with their presence in the community, their professionalism, and their outstanding ability to utilize the resources provided to them by the community. The battered womens' shelter, the homeless shelter, and the annual Operation Turkey Food drive are three noteworthy examples of ACTs ongoing success. I have made ACTs the recipient of my annual giving to the United Way Campaign, as well as participating as I can in their volunteer efforts.
