I am a high school science teacher and this will be the third year I've worked with Acterra to bring real, local science to my students. We have worked with the awesome folks at Acterra both in the field and in our classroom for at least a week each year having students sort and analyze data from local creeks. Students have contributed to real, useful research and found relevance to our ecology unit in both freshmen Biology and AP Environmental Science.

Actera is doing a fantastic job in a dual role of communicating important issues to the community and also taking direct action to improve our environment.

Last December I helped launch the Silicon Valley chapter of 350.org, an organization focused on climate change. Debbie Mytels, of Acterra, has been very supportive in helping our fledgling organization establish itself. We have benefited from her expertise in organizing events and handling publicity. She has helped us with nuts and bolts challenges like finding meeting space. Acterra models a healthy cooperation among local environmental groups.

Acterra is a model for community involvement in care for the environment, providing leadership, training, and opportunities to participate. Acterra engages local political, educational and religious organizations without losing its focus, and so has earned universal respect (or as universal as any regional body can achieve).

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

consistent leadership in stream and watershed management - both professional and volunteer - and in restoration of public lands (Arastradero Preserve).

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

among the best you will find anywhere - dedicated, knowledgeable, patient, and yet still possessing a sense of humor.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

franchise itself everywhere.

I have worked together with this group for about 5 years. I have learned a lot about environmental leadership and sustainable living. They are a great example of a small group of people making a huge difference in the area where they live. They now have 4 cities signed up for Green at Home which should reduce GHG by hundreds of thousands of CO2 equivalents.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

providing leadership to educate the public about environmental issues.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

be worn out trying to manage all the events.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the breadth of knowledge the staff has.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

warm, friendly and knowledgable.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

hire more staff and do more of what it already does well.

Ways to make it better...

I had more time.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

keeping up with all the things it does and making each event a quality venue.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Debbie Mytels is a gracious and talented leader.

Acterra has lots of great projects that change our world. Their Green at home volunteers showed me how to save electricity in my home without sacrificing comfort at all. One of their many other projects involve bringing a local open space back to native plants, which took many years, and it is gorgeous now!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

local open space lower electricity bill
