ABODE SERVICES
Invite reviews
This review is based on their reputation for inability to retain staff and high turnover. How can the public receive consistent services if their staff keep changing? I am frustrated as a client and have inquired about this issue. I am suspecting this is due to management.

i have been a Board member at Abode Services for 13 years. I hjave seen the organization grow over those years, moving from just having an emergency shelter for homeless individuals and families to a multi-dimensional service provider that develops permanent housing for poor people accompanied with supportive services to keep them in their homes. It has received Charity Navigator's top 4 star rating for 6 years in a row. It is seen as the leading organization in the field of supportive housing. It has a growing loyal donor base of local people who believe in its mission to end homelessness. It has a professional staff that is frequently requested to consult with other like agenies nation-wide. It achieves meaningful results for people -- stable housing and connection with resources to assist in maintaining self sufficiency.

I have been connected to Abode Services since it began operations about 20 years ago, as a advocate speaking at City Council meetings in favor of building an emergency shelter for homeless individuals and families, as a donor, as a volunteer, and for the past 13 years as a Board member. From my experience and first-hand observations as a consultant for nonprofit organizations, I believe Abode Services is the most effective and efficient nonprofit organization in the San Francisco Bay area. It is innovative in finding solutions for homelessness, responsive in providing permanent housing for those most in need, willing to partner with other organizations, respected by donors, funders, and the people it serves, and a model for other organizations. I am proud to be associated with this exemplary agency.

To end homelessness by assisting low-income, un-housed people to secure stable, supportive housing; and to be advocates for the removal of the causes of homelessness in Alameda County, California. An ambitious goal set by an ambitious organization, staffed by dedicated professionals, all working united behind the common goal of ending homelessness as we know it! I have been associated with Abode Services for over 12 years, the last 1.5 year serving on the Board of Directors. In my tenor on the Board I have become ever more aware of the scope and reach of the organization and how many lives Abode Services changes for the better every day. It is inspiring to watch the dedication and commitment of the management and staff.

We have supported Abode for a number of years. When we choose a non profit to align with we look for several positive factors: efficient use of donated funds or services, great staff members who exemplify the mission of the organization and visionary leadership from both the top staff members and the board. Abode excels in all three categories. They have ranked at the top with Charity Navigator for 5 straight years, their staff members all believe in the mission with vigor and often support it with their own donations and finally the top staff and board could not be more supportive and in sinc with one another and the entire community they serve. Abode is a winner in every senses of the word.

I have visited every facility they own and/or manage. Support services are an integral part of their mission. They don't just house people in need, they provide social services so they can help them selves out of homelessness.

My husband and I have been volunteers with Abode Services for many years. We have cooked dinners at Sunrise Village, delivered food from the food banks, and tutored children at Sunrise and the Winter Relief Program. The Abode staff is always so helpful, attentive and most appreciative. They really care about the families they are helping. We also enjoy the compkany of all the other volunteers - great people!

I have cooked dinner once a month at Abode (formerly at Tri City Homeless Coalition) for about 12 years. It is a great place providing much needed services in our community. The staff is wonderful. They do so much with so little. Over the years, I have involved my 2 oldest children, teaching them the value of giving back to our community. I feel strongly about the services Abode provides. So strong, that last year I persuaded my church to make a significant donation to fund a piece of capital equipment needed for the kitchen.

The staff is very helpful and concerned about people needs. The volunteer peers I met are very graceful and enjoy their time with the kids.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
expand through the entire bay area and be able to reach more people in need, create more helping programs or maybe start a new business that would create jobs and would keep generating income to make the organization grow.

I spend time with the teens each week. Mostly just spending time with them, playing games, etc. Recently took them on a field trip to a rock climbing gym. Also voluteered at another facility to offer a fitness class. And donated some money. Don't have too much insight into the inner working of the organization, but the services they provide seem to be very helpful. They have both short term and long term assistance. They accomodate varying level of needs, as far as counseling, etc. are concerned. At the long term facility they counsel family units as a unit, not just individuals, which I think is great. All the people that I know that work for them seem to enjoy what they are doing, which is always important, and the residents seem to be benefiting from the services and assistance they receive.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
seeing a family move on from the short term facility. One of the best things such services can do is give people a break for a spell then empower them to move on. Seen them do some great things for the kids, throwing birthday parties, etc.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Getting to know a couple of the teens better, and even getting to take them out to do a couple things they've never done before (ice skating and rock climbing)
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
engaged, committed, and competent. They seemed to enjoy what they did and had the best interest of those whom they serve at heart.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
expand its services further throughout the bay area and accomodate more residents. i think they could also get more staff to provide more services. I think they're sort of pressed as far as enough workers for the load is concerned.
Ways to make it better...
there were more teens to work with. young children is not my gift. I'm better off working with teens, but most of the children that come through are much younger.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
follow-up. don't know if they have any way of helping people once they have left...i.e. tapering off rather than a sudden drop, or just checking up to see how people are doing later. They may do this and I just don't know about it
One thing I'd also say is that...
i'd recommend volunteering and or donations
