I have only started to volunteer at A Place Called Home and I'm already looking forward to doing more volunteer work with them. They offer so many services that are of great need to community and expose kids to different things that traditional schools either don't have the resources for or funding. Good job APCH and thank you.

My name is Gabriela and I have been a member of A Place Called Home since 2004. I discovered many things that I enjoyed doing, for instance one of them is Graphic Designs. Ms. Berenice (The Staff/Woker) helped me a lot on grahic designs and it became funner everytime we met for class. I am now part of the Shaheen Scholarship Program that APCH provides. It has helped a lot now that I am attending CSUDH I don't think I would have done it this far yet, without the help of A Place Called Home. Proud to say that it is a truely peacefully, fun, amazing place.

I first heard about A Place Called Home through a speech by the Creative Director at a Women in Marketing event. The speech was about their Cinderella Project event. I was so moved by the speech that I decided to volunteer at the event. After that, I was hooked! I now volunteer one a week in the Sports and Fitness Program. The staff and the kids at APCH are amazing! I'm constantly impressed by the staff's dedication and the kids' love of life. I cannot think of a better place to volunteer!

I have been a member of A Place Called Home (APCH) since 2001. I am now part of the The Shaheen Scholarship Program that APCH offers to youth in South Central Los Angeles. APCH and the Shaheen scholarship is important because it has benefited me in many ways.
The Shaheen Scholarship has given
me the chance to concentrate more on my education, it has motivated me to study and work harder. The mentors and tutors of the Shaheen Scholarship Program have been assisting me through out my college experience. They have offered me tutors and study sessions with them so I can be able to ask questions and make sure I’m doing my work correctly and understand it as well. Not only do they make sure I do my work correctly but they assist me to learn the material of the subject. With the knowledge I am gaining from the Shaheen Scholarship Program, I am able to help out my fellow classmates as well and teach them a bit of what they've taught me.
The Shaheen Scholarship Program has offered me many workshops to provide me with the understanding of the basic general education of college. They provided me with the Summer Intensive Program, which really helps me understand the education of college level. Two of the classes that really helped me were the College Survival Skills and the Personal Finance class. The College Survival Skills class taught me how to prepare for the challenges I would encounter in college. The main focus of this class are goal setting, picking a major and classes, time management, motivation and stress, and balancing social life and academics. The Personal Finance class informed me how to balance a checkbook, how to create a budget, and other topics to prepare me to learn good financial management.
Overall, the Shaheen Scholarship Program has helped me a lot, just knowing that I have someone to turn to when I have a question or concerned. The mentors and tutors that this program offers have been great with assistance, always helping me around with homework and questions, it feels great knowing that I’m not alone. I have gotten many tips and advices that I will cherish forever and help me to achieve what I want in life, for example, "WIN; W is for Work Smart, not just hard; I is for Initiative, Take It!; and N is for Networking, what you know vs. who you know."
Thanks to the Shaheen Scholarship, I am currently enrolled in California State University, Los Angeles, I’m a junior and my current major is Kinesiology. I expect to graduate within two years with a Bachelors degree and this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the mentors and tutors of the Shaheen Scholarship Program and A Place Called Home, always by my side guiding me and helping through the way of college.

I started my internship at A Place Called Home late August of this year and it is just an amazing place they have here for the kids. APCH has so many opportunities for children and especially the teens of the South Central Los Angeles area. In seeing this and learning more about what they do as a nonprofit for these kids is really just mind bottling. I'm more involved with the Bridge to the Future Program where its mainly for ages 13-20. Here the teens are able to come in and find help with anything they need. It can be help with school work, projects, play games, college applications, financial aid, hang out with their friends, come up with fundraisers for a trip that they want to go on, organize can food drives for their community if they need to vent about a problem they may be having or have questions about anything they can come to the staff in confidence and talk it out and the list can go on! A Place Called Home is hands down an amazing place!

My name is Stephanie and I was a volunteer for several events for the children. What impressed me the most was the joint effort of the staff and children of all nationalities. The children are well deserving of A Place Called Home. The staff and parents make sure everything is in order for the success of the community, and rewarding for the donors. APCH is constantly improving the minds of the most impressional children in the Los Angeles area. Thank you for the wonderful contribution to the community.

I have been a volunteer and member at A Place Called Home. This amazing organization has changed the lives of many children in South Central LA. APCH helps students continue their education by awarding scholarships. This is an excellent and safe place for children. This organization offers a variety of free classes like music, art, sports, etc. The APCH staff are very friendly, supportive, and helpful.

My name is Teresa and I been a member since 2008. I started volunteering this summer. My experience there was amazing. The children are fun and respectful, I really had a good time helping out at APCH this past summer. A Place Called Home offers many great services to the community and leads their members to continue their education and help them apply and afford college. I heard about APCH from my brother he was a member as well and this organization helped him accomplished his goal of going to College. In 2008 he graduated from Cal State LA and is thanks to APCH that he was able to graduate and get his Bachelor of Arts. Now APCH is helping me continue my education, just how they have helped many other students from the community. A Place Called Home not only provides a fun summer program, but offers many programs that help elementary/middle/high school students and college students as well. They also give to the community, just this summer I volunteer for the back to school supplies and there was a huge line of children and their families making a line so they could get their school supplies. APCH is a great non profit organization for the community of Los Angeles.
