Visions in Action was founded in 1988 to provide volunteers to indigenous nonprofit organizations in the developing world. Volunteers serve from 4 weeks to a year in the areas of human rights, journalism, democratization, education, health, environment, food security, social work, microenterprise and community development. Visions has programs in Mexico, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Liberia. Volunteers are committed to achieving social justice in the developing world through a grassroots community of self-reliant volunteers.
Volunteers serve for 6 or 12 months in the areas of human rights, journalism, democratization, education, food security, health, environment, social work, microenterprise and community development. Volunteers live in a group house in an urban area of Africa or Latin America in groups of 3-10. Volunteers undergo a 2-3 week orientation overseas, including language training, homestays, guest speakers and interviews with potential placements. Visions places about 30-40 volunteers a year. Short-term community development programs of 4-6 weeks are run in the summer in Mexico and Tanzania. Visions in Action also currently manages relief and development programs in Liberia and Uganda. In Liberia, Visions works in four program areas: Food Security, Education, Radio and Election Monitoring. In northern Uganda Visions manages two programs: An Emergency Education program for children in Internally Displaced Camps and a program that provides voluntary HIV Counseling & Testing and support to people living with AIDS.
