Reviews for The Sean O'shea Foundation

Rating: 5 stars

The Sean O'Shea Foundation is a quality organization that I have had the privilege to observe, and then volunteer for, for many years. They continue to expand and improve their programs to reach the kids who need it most. They are doing important work in educating kids, parents, and school teachers on simple and effective strategies for stress, anxiety, and self-regulation.

Being involved with the Sean O'Shea Foundation is something I am very grateful for. This amazing family-run non-profit is doing important work in Southern CA with some of the most at-risk kids. As a student at the only fully accredited Mind-Body Medicine PhD program in the world, I see over and over again in the research that self-regulation is the single biggest factor in a child's success: in school, in relationships, in career, and in life. I know this, so I practice yoga and meditation daily to improve my academic success, my relationships, my health, and my ability to adapt to life stressors. How wonderful that the Sean O'Shea Foundation is introducing these life-long skills that will create lasting change and the ability to cope, and thrive, to the most at-risk children in Southern CA. However, it doesn't stop there. Yoga and improved self-regulation decreases criminal behavior and increases compassion, therefore the SOSF is giving back to all of us by transforming society. If there is any way you can get involved: volunteering, fundraising, attending fundraising workshops, etc. you will be providing a meaningful service to others, as well as yourself.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Like most non-profits, the Sean O'Shea Foundation could use more resources to expand their work and serve more kids. They could use help with fundraising, technology, marketing, etc. There is no shortage of heart here, we've got that covered :)

I first became acquainted with the Sean O'Shea Foundation when I received a flyer for a free chair yoga training for educators from a school nurse I worked with. The training was phenomenal, and quite exceeded my expectations. As a Licensed Mental Health Clinician working in a day treatment high school in San Diego, I learned that I could apply to have the SOSF work with the students in weekly yoga classes....for free! I jumped on the opportunity to bring a great resource to the at-risk, high-need population that I worked with. Many of the students were up against challenges such as mental illness, severe behavior issues, gang pressures, trauma, learning disabilities, teen parenting, violent neighborhoods, and chronic socioeconomic stressors.

The Sean O'Shea Foundation ended up working with the students at the school for not just 7 weeks, but several years, and in the process changed a student body and the staff supervising them with their positive message of health, resilience, and taking control over one's circumstances through strength of mind and body. Through the discipline of yoga and nutrition classes, students learned skills to move through life, and in doing so also were surprised to see significant amounts of emotional and physical pain lift. They now had a skill and a hobby to feel good about and mentors that believed in them and demonstrated kind and gentle consistency in their words and actions. Through this process the students developed mental and physical strength and resilience. The staff that participated (myself included) benefited from weight loss, calmer work days, and a nice camaraderie with one another and the students participating.

In addition to being a licensed marriage and family therapist, I am also a facilitator of mind-body skills groups developed by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, and the SOSF message strengthened and reinforced the group curriculum I was teaching to the students, and led to a synergistic process in their journey of self-care. The story of the tragic loss of Sean O'Shea, a man of many virtues, is one the students can identify with, as the lives of many of them have been peppered with loss. They get to experience something beautiful that grew out of the O'Shea family's loss, and develop hope for their own beauty to grow out of their own losses. I can't say enough about how authentic, inspiring, effective, and professional the Sean O'Shea Foundation Non-Profit Yoga Programs are. It is a direct correlation to the staff who run them. I am proud to be serving on the board of directors of this amazing foundation.

Azusa Cal SAFE is a high school program for pregnant and teen parents. Our students are considered "at risk" because of difficult responsibilities and challenges specific to being premature parents. The Sean O'Shea Foundation's INTEGRATED YOGA and WELL-BEING curriculum offers a support service that makes such a difference in their lives. As they master the yoga poses and breathing, they are learning to be strong, flexible, to be self-awareness, meditate and control their mind. This has such a positive impact. We are so grateful to be recipients of their legacy. Imagine they are not only affect the parents but their babies as well, that's two generations at a time.

It is incredible to watch the power of the Sean O'Shea Foundation continue to be a vital part of the community at large and our youth. As the teens at risk continue to grow, the Sean O'Shea Foundation members work diligently and directly with the participants to provide that essential education, source of wellness and refuge in their times of critical need. Those looking to connect to a fulfilling yoga class are sure to find positive experiences through these services. I am so honored to be a part of the foundation. Sean's spirit is always with me as a Yoga Teacher in my life, the same way his light reaches the hearts of our young yogis and yoginis. Thank you to all who support, contribute and offer whatever they are able to provide for this well deserving organization. Namaste.

The Sean Oshea Foundation is a great contribution to the world. Working with the family hss been inspiring, uplifting and incredible to be a part of. Sean was a gifted and extraordinary Yoga Teacher and friend that I was incredibly blessed to study with. His spirit will always be a part of my life and teachings of yoga. Serving for the foundation as a Board Member, Yoga Instructor and Advisor has been a great blessing. The experiences I have had have moved me to tears and added tremendous value to my life. I highly recommend participating in any way possible. The foundation embodies the essence of yoga; unity, connection, compassion and service to humanity. Thanks for your support. Namaste. Having been an Elementary School Teacher in San Diego County, I saw a huge need for making Yoga accessible to our youth, so I started offering yoga during and after school . Fortunately, I was able to join the Sean O'Shea Foundation and teach six week and longer FREE Yoga Programs to at-risk youth in San Diego County! The light and inspiration in the eyes of the students I was teaching, reminded me of the Divine presence I used to see shining in Sean's eyes. Yoga teaches us that "we are all connected". so I see how Sean's mission is still be fulfilled! If you want to know what it is to Love in an Infinite way, get to know Sean's family, through the Sean O'Shea Foundation. They reflect, embody, and share Yoga in a way that penetrates the heart and calls you to create deeply fulfilling contributions. Thank You for your support! I have been a part of SOF for going on 5 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. I specifically work with teenage parents, and the students I see every week are not only changing their own lives but also improving the quality of their babies. Without SOF, they would not have the opportunity to experience yoga and nutrition on a weekly basis. I love being a part of this movement!

This foundation is amazing. I have taught for them in the classroom and at Rady's Children's Hospital. I have seen first hand the value in teaching yoga and nutrition. It effects and changes the lives of students, young children with cancer and their families. The skills that children learn through this program are priceless. They learn how to be mindful, thoughtful and peaceful while also learning how to incorporate a yoga practice in their lives. I am so lucky to be part of a foundation, which has such high expectations and goals, with the intention to teach children valuable life skills that they can practice and continue learn.

I have been working with the Sean Shea Foundation for about three years now. I am impressed by all of their programs and the impact they have had on our youth. I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to teach yoga for this non-profit, in a few different settings. I have seen first-hand the incredible effects of yoga in the classroom and in a hospital setting. Yoga and nutrition in a school setting is so important. This program gives children the tools to make healthy and mindful decisions about their mental and physical well being. Also, having previous experience as an elementary school teacher, I know the need for this type of life tool. It may be difficult for us to grasp what these children are going through, however we can guide them in a positive direction through the teachings of nutrition and yoga. I have also been fortunate enough to volunteer with the program “Yoga 4 Kids with Cancer”. As a yoga teacher and volunteer, I have been able to help so many ill children, as well as, have an impact on their families. Yoga in the hospital setting is very important. It helps to calm and soothe suffering children that may be in pain, experiencing discomfort, or may be scared of the unknown. Also, this program helps the families that are tired, worried and stressed immensely. They are given the opportunity to get in some well-needed stretching or breath work. These calming tools can then be practiced, individually and together as a family, any time needed. Furthermore, guardians and parents of these children have expressed their gratitude for the program and the ability to learn some calming techniques that can be used in the hospital setting and when they go home with other family members.

I strongly believe in the yoga programs offered by the Sean O’Shea Foundation. I feel so lucky and proud to be part of these amazing programs with fantastic, generous and smart people. I look forward to continuously seeing the amazing results that all of their programs have to offer.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

assist more with fundraising, so we could expand the program and reach more children.

My students and I were fortunate to be served by the Sean O'shea Foundation. Each week my students and I looked forward to participating in yoga and learning about healthy alternatives to sugary snacks. The Sean O'shea foundation has provided my students with an invaluable opportunity which most would be unable to afford.

The Sean O' Shea Foundation holds a dear place in my heart for sentimental reasons, as Sean was one if the kindest & most charismatic persons I have met. To see the foundation grow from a thought to what it is now is a testament to dedication, passion, and perseverance. Listening to the participants of the program tell their experience gives it great validation, as they are all transformed by the experience.

when I watch the children and at risk teens ask for more after our free programs, it is amazing from the transition of "why are we doing this and poking and grousing, to, can you bring this back, we like yoga that we have never experienced as it relaxes us and helps us be more focused in our studies. also the nutrition info helps us understand there are different options to make us feel better and understand what processed and fast food does to our bodies! these children and teens see what sean tried to do and respect at the end the teachings we provide, asking for more. it is so heartwarming to see, after only 7 weeks of free after school programs the transformation and desire to improve more. we are limited based on funding to offer this to more, yet in over 5 years, we have grown, touching more lives. we grow slowly now with more contributions yet there is such a need to touch and empower more lives! we have gratitude for the change we give these children and teens and are slowly growing with more programs with rady children's hospital and short awareness programs. honor our children with more
