In 1973 Dr. Mark Frankel, an orthopedic surgeon of Tucson came to Nogales, Sonora to visit some children in need. He continued to come to Nogales monthly thereby forming the clinic. In 1976 the Clinic moved to St. Andrew''s Episcopal Church in Nogales, Arizona and more specialists joined. In 1990 the Clinic incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) status. Now, on the first Thursday of every month about 250 children from Mexico desend upon the church and are treated by orthopedic surgeons, pediatricians, neurologists, dermatologists who are assisted by various therapists; speech, physical, occupational, nutrition, and audeology. The Clinic also has over 100 volunteers who do many chores; driving, interpreting, feeding, clerical duties and generally loving these special kids. Surgeries and other testing are done through the University of Arizona College of Medicine. The Clinic is also used by the college as a training point for medical students.
The Clinic continues as an orthopedic and pediatric clinic. So many children from Mexico cannot receive adequate care either because it isn't available or they cannot afford it. St. Andrew's fills a most important gap. Our doctors, primarily from the University of Arizona College of Medicine bring an expertise beyond anything available in Mexico. Once monthly they see about 200 children for birth defects, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and various other kinds of disabilitating illnesses. Surgeries are arranged, medicines prescribed, braces made, further testing or consultations are arranged on that day. Throughout the month a steady stream of patients travel the sixty five miles north to the University Medical Center where these services are performed. In addition we are building a relationship with Shriners Hospitals who are beginning to see some of our orthopedic and burned children. The Clinic buys all medicines, braces, prosthetics, hearing aids, wheel chairs and so forth. It also pays for all outside testing such as MRIs, Cat-scans, x-rays. All patient transportation to and from these locations is paid for by the clinic.
