The mission of the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF) is to create and sustain a healthier community through a compassionate, comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS. In 1997, three AIDS service organizations in Tucson (Tucson AIDS Project, PACT for Life, and Shanti Foundation) merged to form SAAF. SAAF continues the tradition of the previous agencies, providing direct services and programs in safe, supportive environments that enhance the quality of life for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS; assisting people in avoiding HIV infection; and empowering people to lead healthy, productive lives.

SAAF - Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation - is a provider of HIV/AIDS prevention information to the public and client services to patients. It is a highly effective organization that Tucson is blessed to have. The second HIV/AIDS organization - TIHAN - is faith-based and the two work hand in glove. Most of our clients and volunteers in one organization inevitably are part of the other, too. SAAF puts on two annual fundraisers: Jello Wrestling and Moda Provacateur, that are usually sold out as soon as the tickets go on sale. Jello Wrestling is a combination drag show and jellow wrestling match. It's hilarious, and everyone loves the show. Moda is a fashion show that is full of great music and talented volunteer performers and stage crews. We also stage the local AIDSWalk. SAAF volunteers give out prevention information anywhere we're welcome. Our clients depend on us for housing, moral support, counseling, life giving meals, and a host of other vital functions.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I have friends that are clients. They depend on SAAF for their vitamins, housing, counseling, etc. It is the central part of their lives in most cases. They give back as SAAF volunteers. It's a beautiful relationship and a testament to SAAF effectiveness.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Let the old management do their job - it can't be improved on!
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The wonderful, kind, fun people at this organization, all of whom have become friends. I can be gone from them for months and come back for a volunteer show, and staff recognize me and know my name and treat me like I'm part of something great.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Fun, friendly, loving and caring people that put their heart and soul into the clients we serve. I'm deeply proud and honored to be a volunteer here.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Expand education and client services. We work closely with the county health service and their is never enough money to help everyone as much as we would like.
Ways to make it better...
Can't think of a single thing to complain about. Love this place!
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Not enough money, not enough volunteers. Same as every other non-profit.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I have learned so much from SAAF. I have taken their principles of volunteer appreciation and have brought them to my church and my employer. Never have I felt so appreciated as I do here. They are just magic!
