Reviews for San Francisco Food Bank

Rating: 4 stars

With funding for food stamps falling, it's important to support our neighbors who need help with the most basic needs. The food bank is more important than ever

it was fine. i gave them a lot of food and they appreciated it but i guess the lack of personal interaction didn't give me that warm and fuzzy feeling - but thinking that I fed folks should be what's important.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

contributing towards its mission of feeding the hungry

Love the Food Bank. They make a huge difference to the lives of people in SF. They make so much available to soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in San Francisco in an easy access way and they're really focused on getting as much food to people as possible. They're a model for how other Food Banks should work.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seniors not forced to choose between food or medicine. Families getting a bag of food to help the budget stretch further. Hungry folks at the end of the month getting a meal at a soup kitchen instead of going hungry.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Put a little more emphasis on communicating to the volunteers - I think they lose some great supporters early on because they don't engage them quickly enough.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I made great friends while volunteering here. Also, I'm really proud to be able to say I've volunteered for them, because what they achieve is so great.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Friendly and fun

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Expand its advocacy and education programs - and help feed a lot more people!

Ways to make it better...

In the beginning the emphasis seems to be all on where the food is coming from - it took some time before I started to see more of how it's distributed. More communication of the results would help it feel warmer and fuzzier earlier.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The economy and political indifference to poverty.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I was really impressed with the way the Food Bank focused on making resources available for other nonprofits rather than trying to tell them how to feed their clients.

I am coming to this from a volunteer perspective, but I can see in their tremendous warehouse, through their efficient volunteer shifts, and their ubiquitous green bins around the Bay Area that this organization is likely a national leader in how food banks should operate. For volunteers, the work is made super clear and the goal is efficiency; the reward is a super satisfying tally of pounds-of-food finished (whether it's boxing up cucumbers or bagging rice) and an overview of where it will go. They are a remarkably well-run organization, not letting one grain of rice go to waste.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have not personally experienced the end result of receiving food assistance.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I'm trying to think but...well I can't.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The clarity, efficiency and 'get-'er'done' satisfaction of the 2-hour volunteer shift.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

VERY knowledgeable, very clear on instruction, very motivating and very helpful (and dedicated!)

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

I don't know if it should get $10MN unless the community is in such dire straights. You don't want to create more than is needed, grow dependency on a food bank?

Ways to make it better...

Seriously, nothing.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Perhaps in general the philosophical question comes to mind: Will we ever NOT need the food bank?? Maybe a challenge to the SF Food Bank is working toward eventually not being necessary/ending hunger.

One thing I'd also say is that...

If you haven't volunteered here, do it now:)

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month

The SF Food Bank is a fantastic organization in every sense. Their mission is clear and the deliver on it. Donations go to recipients. And I have never seen an organization that does so well with its volunteers. As a volunteer you are greeted, organized, well instructed and very productive. They know what to do with the volunteers and so your time is put to good use. Plus they reward you at the end with all the stats regarding the work you have done. It is fun to go with a group - we have done team builing there, I know a friend who had her birthday party there (she brought a cake for the break).

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Helpful, friendly, hard-working.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help more people in need.

i went here for an evening volunteer event. friends do it more regularly than I. you show up at a set time, and they break you into groups and have you do things like sort cans, sort produce, or pack up food. it was reasonably organized, and reasonably social when you go with friends. i guess I could have used a bit more info on the organization's mission and where everything goes, but they did have a brief intro and tour.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the volunteer experience, but it was my only experience

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

helpful and friendly.
