Mission:

Founded in 1996, the Reef Check Foundation is a California based 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the world’s reefs. Reef Check’s mission is to empower local communities to protect and rehabilitate reefs worldwide. We do so through grassroots research, conservation, and education. Headquartered in Southern California, Reef Check has built a global network of over 30,000 volunteers that monitor reefs worldwide and is organized into three programs: The Tropical Reefs Program, the Baja California, Mexico Program and the California Program. With an incredibly lean staff of 6 fulltime employees, Reef Check coordinates coral reef conservation in over 90 countries and territories, as well as temperate rocky reef monitoring and conservation through its Baja and the California programs. Reef Check has helped to establish and manage marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Dominican Republic. The foundation takes a grassroots approach to build independent teams of volunteer citizen scientists to monitor and protect reefs through scientific data collection and conservation in their local communities. This concept of community empowerment, to protect reefs and the communities that depend on them, has proven very successful around the world, as Reef Check continues to make big strides in global reef conservation and community development.

Results:

Reef Check’s grassroots approach to scientific data collection and reef conservation is unprecedented in its worldwide scope and impact, and as a result, Reef Check was awarded the 2013 Katerva Prize as the world’s top ecosystem conservation organization.
