Mental Health, Human Services, Seniors

Pacific Institute's mission is to promote individual and community wellness and to advance, disseminate, and preserve knowledge in existential fields with healing and evolving purposes. Pacific Institute supports this mission by promoting global awareness in our staff, students, and affiliates and by creating learning opportunities that reach toward service and compassion in the highest possible sense. Pacific Institute strives toward the recovery of meaning in our lives, that is, a central place of concern; commitment, devotion, and energy from which we can plan and direct our work back to the community.
Specifically, the Institute has three main projects. The Gerontological Wellness Program is dedicated to the direct delivery of services and brings a comprehensive concept of care to residential care facilities for aging adults, seniors, and residents with mental health issues. Emphasizing the emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of aging, licensed mental health professionals, interns, and trainees work in concert with residential care facilities in San Francisco and the Bay Area to provide psycho-social-spiritual care to residents within the facilities. In our innovative work with the elderly, we emphasize the aging process as a challenging and rewarding period that is neglected not only by the individuals themselves but also by our communities and health professionals. The second project is the Institute's Educational Programs which include professional internship, professional development, and public lecture programs. The Internship actually provides two programs within the same internship: The Gerontological Wellness Program Internship and the Intensive Clinical Training Program. These programs provide training for Master's level and Ph.D. level graduate students and professionals in mental health, nursing, and social work related to Gerontology. The programs are not only vitally important for the improved care of the Bay Area's aging population, but serve as training grounds for professionals whose career goals include the complete well-being of the elderly. The Institute's Intensive Clinical Training Program within the internship is a joint program with the City of San Francisco Public Health Department and the Community Behavioral Health Services (CBHS). The ICT program offers interns and trainees the challenging opportunity of receiving training, providing direct services, and being part of the cutting-edge Community Behavioral Health Services of the City of San Francisco. Using Pacific Institute's philosophy of training, students have the opportunity to learn from and support individuals, families, and groups served by the CBHS. Some of the services to which trainees and interns will be introduced include: psychiatric emergency services, mobile crisis, suicide prevention, urgent care, intensive and residential treatment, and homeless shelter-based services. Pacific Institute's second major educational project is its Continuing Professional Education programs. The Institute provides a wide range of continuing professional education opportunities for psychologists, therapists, social workers, nurses, and other related professionals through direct delivery of continuing education programs. Our continuing education mission is to optimize patient care and delivery of services. To this end, our programs are designed to provide the most up-to-date information and strategies for clinicians and allied health professionals. Elders Academy Press is the third major project of Pacific Institute and is an expanding program with two communication purposes. It seeks to help change perceptions of the elderly and aging and develop a vision of a contemporary Elder. Recent publications include Faces of Aging by Nader Robert Shabahangi, Ph.D. and The Therapies of Literature by Richard W. Wiseman, Ph.D. with a Foreword by Rollo May. Publishing projects include an anthology celebrating the joys and challenges of aging, a book of poetry about aging, a book demystifying dementia, and a book regarding self-esteem issues of aging women.
