Nonprofit Issues:

Health, Human Services, Breast Cancer

Address:

2600 Network Blvd STE 300 Frisco TX 75034 USA

Mission:

The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to provide help and inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.

Results:

NBCF has provided over 340,000 patient services since 2005 through their network of hospitals. With rising healthcare costs, many uninsured or underinsured women cannot afford the cost of diagnostic tests. By providing free mammograms and breast care services to underserved women, NBCF will increase the early detection of breast cancer which will lead to higher survival rates. Facilities within the NMP continue to report that because of grant funding from NBCF, they are able to help women in their areas that did not qualify for state or local funds to access mammography services. Any life that is saved is an example of the success of the program. Based on findings about how breast cancer initiation cells can resist drug treatment, researchers are now developing clinical trials to suppress breast cancer initiation cells. Researchers have found that gene therapy delivered directly to a particularly stubborn type of breast cancer cell caused the cell to self-destruct, lowered the chance of recurrence, and helped increase the effectiveness of some types of chemotherapy.

Target demographics:

Underserved and uninsured women

Geographic areas served:

Throughout the United States

Programs:

National Mammography Program/Patient Services Through the National Mammography Program (NMP), NBCF partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to underserved women. The NMP network includes 88 medical facilities in all 50 states. Through patient navigation programs at medical facilities within their network, NBCF is able to promote early detection procedures to those that need it most. Patient navigation is a proactive approach to helping patients overcome the barriers of cost, fear, and misinformation surrounding a disease and its prevention. Early Detection/Awareness Education NBCF’s Early Detection Plan is an interactive tool available both online and as an iPhone App. The Early Detection Plan reminds women to schedule routine breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammograms. MyNBCF (www.MyNBCF.org) is an online support community that has been described by its members as “an avenue to share, vent, cry and laugh.” The community provides breast cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones a safe place to discuss breast cancer. Beyond the Shock® is a step-by-step guide to understanding the diagnosis of breast cancer presented in an interactive online website. It allows those affected by breast cancer to learn about breast cancer, ask and answer questions, and hear inspirational stories from breast cancer survivors. The Breast Health Education Program is a new program launched in 2012 that provides breast cancer education and early detection services to women at community outreaches across the country. NBCF educates women about the importance of early detection and informs them about resources that are available in their community. Women are given the opportunity to receive free clinical breast exams from nurse practitioners. Breast Cancer Research NBCF strives to help find the cure for breast cancer by working with some of the finest scientists in the world. Funding is provided to MD Anderson Cancer Center, Cleveland Clinic, and Worldwide Innovative Networking for research efforts focused on targeted therapy for breast cancer initiating cells, therapeutic and preventative drugs for breast cancer, and the first clinical trial offering a choice of therapy guided by the biology to the majority of patients included in the study. Their goals are to identify and personalize cancer treatment to offer hope and healing to the countless women diagnosed each year.

Reviews for National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.

Rating: 5 stars

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) has been an outstanding partner with Sibley Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine for many years. Our alliance allows both organizations to extend beyond their own boundaries to ensure that women in the community get the best breast healthcare possible. With NBCF’s support, Sibley Memorial Hospital has been able to expand our navigation services to patients for screening, at point of diagnosis, during treatment and beyond into survivorship. NBCF is a compassionate and accountable organization. As grant recipient we are regularly given the opportunity to report to NBCF on our navigation program achievements, and we are honored to collaborate with this exceptional organization.

NBCF has provided us with funds to provide navigation services for our uninsured and under-insured clients in Camden, NJ who have been screened and found to have breast abnormalities. Through these funds, we have been able to seamlessly process patients through the health care system, providing translation services, transportation services and case management as they undergo diagnostic services and treatment when needed. NBCF has been a wonderful partner with true interest in serving our community and we are blessed to have their support.

The American-Italian Cancer Foundation is honored to work with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since 2001, NBCF has provided essential support to our No-Cost Breast Cancer Screening Program, allowing un-insured or under-insured New York City to receive their yearly mammograms and clinical breast exams. They have also allowed us to provide outreach and follow up services through our Patient Navigator Program. AICF and the women we serve are so thankful to work with NBCF!

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is proud to call the National Breast Cancer Foundation a partner in the fight against cancer. As a result of NBCF's fantastic, steadfast support over the last two years, Dana-Farber's Mammography Van has been able to provide life-saving breast health education and screening to underserved women throughout the Boston area. In addition, NBCF staff are extremely helpful and responsive to any and all questions. We are honored to partner with such a committed and mission-driven organization.

National Breast Cancer Foundation has been an ideal partner for us at Parkland Hospital. By working closely with them to articulate the needs of underserved and minority women in Dallas, we have had great synergy; and they have provided funding for mammography, diagnostics and most importantly, patient navigation services. NBCF is enthusiastic and caring in their work with us but also rigorous and consistent in their request for outcome measures, success stories and instances when they need our help to inspire others to give. We are pleased and proud to have their support and intend for ours to be a lifetime partnership.

On behalf of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center, we are honored and thrilled to continue to receive funding to support a key element of our breast nurse navigation program. As an institution who performs a large volume of screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, and also thousands of biopsies, we know the value of early detection. The NBCF has enabled us to provide nurse navigation in unique ways which includes breast imaging. Our navigator facilitates our weekly breast imaging/breast surgical oncology team radiology reviews so that patients having breast cancer surgery in the coming 7 days have their breast imaging studies and other tests carefully reviewed so that there is nothing missed or overlooked in preparing the patient for the right surgery in the right setting at the right time by the right providers. This same nurse navigator, who herself is a breast cancer survivor, also conducts community outreach events to raise awareness, undo myths, instill the facts, and she personally navigates breast cancer patients from their point of diagnosis through their treatment experience. Though thankfully the majority of breast cancer patients today become long term survivors, not all do. This navigator also is a co-facilitator with me for our semi annual metastatic breast cancer patient retreats which help patients and their family members prepare for what will lie ahead. Additionally, this nurse navigator also oversees our team of survivor volunteers who come on site to hold hands of patients getting biopsies. It is comforting during a time when fear of hearing "you have breast cancer" is on the minds of patients, they can be comforted by someone who is a survivor. She also conducts our annual survivor retreat as well. We are truly blessed to have the support of this terrific organization.

On behalf of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center, we have been blessed with receiving grant support to fund one of our very much needed breast nurse navigators. NBCF does an amazing job providing grants for this purpose so that more and more breast patients can be supported from the point of their diagnostic mammogram/ultrasound through to the completion of treatment and beyond as a long term survivor or end of life. We are proud to have such a partnership with them!! Lillie Shockney, Director, JH Breast Center

The Johns Hopkins Breast Center has been blessed with funding from this stellar organization that directly supports our advocacy, education, navigation and support efforts of patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer as well as those receiving diagnostic evaluation and breast biopsies that may lead to the discovery of a newly diagnosed woman.
Their passion for what they do is to be commended. Their Director is someone i personally admire and take pride in knowing and working with her. Lillie D Shockney, Director, Johns Hopkins Breast Center.
