Programs:

Miami Science Museum is committed to excellence, both at its current facility and at the new Museum. Toward this end, exhibition and program development will continue to be a key area of emphasis. An internationally-renowned science center, unsurpassed in form and content, is our ultimate objective when the new Museum opens in 2014.

Developing exhibition and program prototypes for the new facility is an essential element of the development process. Content development and testing, therefore, will continue until the new museum opens. This process is vital given the new facility’s unique, world-class potential. Realizing that potential will require a heighted level of on-going innovation.

The Wildlife Center remains a visitor favorite. A 20,000 square foot outdoor space, its principal objective is to raise visitor awareness of local environmental issues, particularly the preservation of local species and habitats. The Center was established in 1977 to increase awareness and appreciation of Florida's wildlife by creating learning experiences through exhibitions, educational outreach and ecological research.

The Wildlife Center’s unique Falcon Batchelor Bird of Prey Center merits particular attention. This Center was created in 1991 in response to the overwhelming number of injured and orphaned raptors (birds of prey) brought to the Museum by individuals who found them along roads, fields, and backyards. Those that fully recuperate are released into the wild. Since its opening, staff at the Center’s Animal Hospital have rehabilitated and returned literally thousands of animals to the wild.

The Museum’s Planetarium has also had a considerable impact. Since its opening 42 years ago, the Planetarium has served millions of visitors and, through the weekly PBS program “Stargazer” – hosted by none other than veteran star gazer Jack Horkheimer - reached even more national and international viewers learning to appreciate naked-eye astronomy. Laser Shows are presented to excited sold-out crowds the first Friday of each month and telescope viewing uses the Museum’s telescopes collection to view the night sky. Accompanying interpretation focuses on the celestial bodies most prominent during a particular season of the year.

To ensure a rich experience for everyone, the Museum’s diverse array of current and future exhibitions includes a rich mix of hands-on interactives, multimedia offerings, artifacts, live animals and bilingual interpretation. This diversity ensures every visit to MSM is a multi-dimensional, informal learning opportunity.
