Mother House is a small, non-profit (501c3) organization that was founded in 1982 to simply shelter and support homeless, pregnant women ages 16 years of age and up. I was involved as a volunteer prior to becoming the director in 1997. I strongly support the mission of this small organiation because there is no hidden agenda other than to help pregnant women in a crisis. Our program gives a scared, homeless, pregnant women hope, acceptance and a healthy and clean environment to live in. Mother House can house up to seven women and their babies ages 16 years and up. Mother House provides referrals for future housing, pre-natal care, therapy and counseling, as well as referrals for drug/alcohol treatment programs. The facility is situated in a central downtown Boulder, Colorado. The residence is completely furnished home with five bedrooms (two are doubles), fully-equippped kitchen, library with computers and internet, laundry facility, bus transportation and total connectivity to all social service agencies in Boulder, Colorado. All of our women are given opportunities to further their education, along with child birth classes and Monday Night Speakers who instruct the residents on topics that pertain to their circumstances. All residents who enter our program come at different stages of their pregnancy and are allowed to reside at Mother House well after their baby is born. (two to four months). Mother House has sheltered women not only from Boulder, Colorado but women from all over the United States including foreign countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, Brazil, Philippines and Jamaica.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Personal experience has been profound. I've witnessed undernourished and scared pregnant women blossom into happy and healthy expectant moms-to-be. I have witnessed women attain self-respect and confidence while preparing themselves for their role as a single-parent. I have seen women conquor their fear of the unknown as a single parent and embrace motherhood. I have experienced the selflessness of many women who chose to relinquish their newborn to loving famlies.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Expand the facility to accommodate more than just sven women and seven newborns. As well I would create another live-in house managers quarters so that there could be two House Managers on staff. I would also attain a transitional facility (next step) for women leaving the Mother House program to move to for up to two more years. This facility would have private rooms for the moms and their babies.
