Contributor alert: 29% of their expenses is fund raising and 14% is administrative costs. So if you give $100, $43 goes to them.

Thank you for your feedback Kathy. HeroBox is not a volunteer only effort that supports a few service members. We’re a national organization that supports tens of thousands of heroes each year. This level of impact requires a certain amount of fundraising and administrative overhead that enables us to continue supporting our heroes. Thank you for supporting the troops.

I just signed up to send packages to a deployed military person. I sent him an email to ask more specifics of things he wanted. Not knowing if I would hear back or not. I got a response within 30 minutes. I'm very excited to send him a package with the items he wants!

Being involved with HeroBox.org has been one of the most rewarding experiences to date. I have been paired with 3 different Heroes and each experience has been unique and rewarding. What was supposed to have been me sending out a care package monthly, based on their needs/wants, has evolved into friendships and "pen pals", if you will. I was lucky enough to hear from each of my heroes on a regular basis, whether it be through letters, emails or instant messaging. Knowing first hand the difference I have been able to make while they were deployed is a feeling that you just can't put into words. Of course, i will need to find a way as I will be meeting one of my heroes in person later this year. Thank you HeroBox for affording me this opportunity to help those who give so much of themselves to a nation that will never fully understand exactly what these selfless men and women go through to keep us safe!

I was looking for a non profit to help where I could do the most good. Hero Box caught my attention, especially since I have family in the military that was serving overseas at the time. They paired me with a very nice soldier and some of my co-workers and I got together and filled the boxes for him. He did email me and expressed his appreciation for what he received. I was happy that we could send him a little bit of home. This is a great cause!!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Participating in sending a Hero Box overseas to a deployed soldier

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I like it just the way it is.

I was a general member of the public as well. I heard about Herobox in the news following the MLB AllStar game. I liked sending the package each month. I didn't get a response from the soldier, but like the others who have reviewed the organization, its not about me, its about them.

I tried several ways to verify the mailing label was filled out correct, but couldn't get verification. I went to the post office, the local recruiting office & a mother that has a son over seas. The copy that is with the instructions on the web site is outdated. I would love to be able to support a soldier through this orginazation, but had no way of knowing that the packages were getting to the soldier or sitting in a post office warehouse somewhere.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Ways to make it better...

I could have gotten a more up to date example of the mailing label that had better instruction for completing it. The one on the site is from 2007.

I met Ryan and his family shortly after he started Hero Box. What I admire about Ryan was his effort and determination to make this non-profit a go. We are a military family and have several loved ones deployed. My son, who just came home from Afganastan, said that the second hardest thing about depoyment was being away from the "everyday things of life". That, "Do the folks back home no what they give up for us"? Hero Box brings a little of that back to them. Thank you Hero Box!

I'm a Property Manager as well as in the Coast Guard Auxilliary. I came upon your web site when I was looking to help our soldiers overseas in the war and I was absolutely floored to see the hands on work being done and the care boxes that were being sent to each soldier and the expressions on their face when they saw the herobox convinced me that this was the place I wanted to work with to get some goodies to the troops! It was so easy and great to get it done online and also the website shows everyone helping out and the soldiers getting the packages, especially around the holidays really moved me. They also have t-shirts and wrist bands which I also purchased and everytime I wear the shirt it immediately has people coming up and asking me about it and I tell them what a wonderful charity this is. My thanks to you for all your help to our men and women braving it overseas! Sincerely, Laura McCabe

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

viewing their online photos and stories from the troops

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

get more marketing out to more public websites to see what fantastic work they're doing.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The feeling that I am directly impacting the lives of our troops overseas!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

online and on the phone mostly

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help so many soldiers overseas feel like we love them and always will be there for them when they need by getting them more stuff to ease their burden during war.

Ways to make it better...

I was there to give them out but I can't so that's why I love this charity.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

getting the publicity they need and enough people to donate

One thing I'd also say is that...

I love our men and women who are fighting for our country and will continue to be there for them when they need!

I just read through several of the posts and the common wish for improvement is communication with the soldier. I agree this would be the ultimate - to know that the package sent appreciated and was filled with the things needed and wanted by them. However, I imagine they have other things on their minds and so I try to remember that I am doing this for them - it is not for me, even through communication with them would be great! I believe that whatever I send will be welcomed and will used by some soldier who needs it. I cannot imagine what it is like for them. I thank them for their sacrifice.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

it has provided a means for me to gain the feeling that I am in some small way helping.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

provide needed or desired items for all those troops serving the USA.

I found out about HeroBox while watching the MLB All Star game. When former US President Jimmy Carter explained what Ryan Housley was doing for our deployed soldiers, I was moved. What a wonderful way to show our soldiers that we care and make their deployment a little better. The HeroBox website was very helpful in giving me instructions and answering my questions. I would like to thank Jennifer from the HeroBox office for getting back to me so quickly when I emailed her with some questions. I have sent out 5 boxes so far. The last one just an extra Easter box with enough jelly beans and "Peeps" for all 18 guys in Rob's security detail on his base in Tikrit, Iraq. Some of the guys get very little from home and love to get packages. I have been fortunate that I have been in contact with Rob a great deal. I had to guess what to send early, but now I think I know exactly what to send. He is a great kid who shares with his buddies alot. I absolutely love helping him out.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the feedback from the soldier I send to. I just wish all deployed soldiers had sponsors.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

how easy it was to get to started sending the packages. Instructions were great.
