Mission:

The Fiver Children''s Foundation is a comprehensive youth development organization that empowers children from underserved communities to develop life skills and to reach their full potential. Fiver''s 10 year commitment to each child includes year-round mentoring and counseling programs, a character building residential summer program, and partnerships with schools and community based organizations.

Results:

In 2011, Fiver received the Excellence in Summer Learning Award from the National Summer Learning Association. In 2010, Social Impact Research, an independent research department of Root Cause, selected Fiver as 1 of 7 high-performing college access and success organizations in New York City. Since 2000, 93% of program graduates have graduated from high school (a figure well beyond the 65 percent average of their New York City peers). 95% of those graduates have gone on to college, many being the first in their family to achieve this milestone.

Target demographics:

At - Risk, Low - Income children and their families in the New York area between the ages of 8 and 18.

Geographic areas served:

New York City and Central New York State

Programs:

Ten Year Commitment: Every year, 8-9 years olds are selected from partnering community based organizations to join the Fiver program. Children participate for 10 years free of charge. In addition to building character and developing leadership skills, Fiver is committed to helping every participant to graduate from high school. Fiver also supports each participant by creating an individualized, post-high school path to success. This path may include college, job training programs, or employment.Fiver Participants: All youth recruited into Fiver programs come from families eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Under these guidelines, a family of four must make less than $38,000 annually. Approximately 85% of the children and families live in New York City with the majority centralized in the neighborhoods of Fiver?s community partners: Mott Haven, East Harlem, Harlem, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Sunset Park, and East Flatbush. The remaining participants live in rural Madison County within 30 miles of our summer camp in Poolville, New York. Fiver currently serves 500 children. The Fiver program participants are 41% Hispanic or Latino, 34% African-American, 15% Caucasian, 8% multi-racial, and 2% Asian. Over 40% live in single parent homes and an additional 8% reside with other relatives or foster parents. Character Education: All participants are introduced to Fiver?s character education curriculum, The Whole Self Program, upon enrolling in Fiver. This curriculum is incorporated into all program areas throughout the ten years and helps create a culture of affirmation at Fiver. Through group activities, discussion, and individual goal-setting, the program promotes children?s understanding of and appreciation for the five qualities valued at Fiver: being a Friend, an Individual, a Valuable Team Player, an Environmentalist, and a Risk Taker. Developmental Stages: The Fiver children progress through the following four stages during their decade-long tenure, LEARN, TAP, LEAD and SERVE. LEARN (ages 8-12) participants focus on developing self confidence and broadening their perspective with regard to goals and dreams. TAP (ages 13-14) participants work on personal and academic preparedness for the journey through high school, the importance of giving back through community service, and lessons learned through team-building initiatives. LEAD (ages 15-16) participants perform individual and group community service projects, participate in ethical decision-making and wilderness survival classes, develop leadership skills, and focus on college and career preparation. The SERVE program (ages 17-18) is aimed at assisting with the final years of high school (college applications, financial aid, etc) and with the post-high school transition into college, job training programs, or careers.

Fiver gave my son the opportunity to go away a couple of weeks away in the summer to enjoy the great outdoors that he otherwise rarely gets to do nor does he ever get to go away on vacations as we cannot afford it. Provided him with encouragement to do well in school and set goals for his fiture. It has open his eyes to various activities, sports and experiences that he rarely gets the opportunity for having come from a background of very little family, money and going out much. I appreciate Fiver for helping my son grow up into a well rounded individule with wanting to improve himself with desiring to continue on with his education despite having a slight learning difficulty making it a challenge to do well in school. It's given him the confidence to believe he can do it and make something of himself. Thank You Fiver!

The work that I see the Fiver do is tremendous. They are truly invested in their kids (a.k.a. "Fivers") and demonstrate that through a 10 year commitment to character-building summers and year-round out-of-school time programs. It is an honor to be part of this organization - and to see these amazing kids grow and succeed! I encourage anyone not familiar with Fiver to learn more here: http://www.fiver.org/.

Truly, truly one of the Great Nonprofits!

I have been involved with Fiver for the past 3 years and it has been such an amazing experience being a part of this fantastic organization. The character building aspects of the program continue to astound me with every young adult I meet who has gone through the Fiver program. The high school/college graduation success numbers speak for themselves but seeing so many Fiver alumni return to volunteer is a true indication of how this organization has profoundly affected them in that they want to see future generations provided with the same and hopefully better experience that they received.

This is a great organization. They have helped many young adults apply and be accepted to top colleges and universities in the nation. These are young adults that may not have had this opportunity without Fiver!

I am an even more amazing person today then i would i have been without FIVER. They taught me from my youth as an eight year old growing up into an adult as a twenty four year old. I was an original founding kid. back in 2000 when it opened its giving me more than i could dream. Riding horses, sewing, camp fires, team sports, learning how to swim, and so much more. things i may have never known as a city kid. building my character and rewarding me for it by giving me a dog tag until i gained all twelve. Staff, Kids, Volunteers, Parents, and the partnerships all were positive life influences. It was always a home away from home and a paradise away from the city. You don't realize how the city holds you down until you've been set free in the wild. I could right all day about FIVER but its an experience on any level that you have to have for yourself to truly appreciate what it means to be apart of FIVER. To embody what it truly means to be a Friend, Individual, Valuable team player, Environmentalist, and a Risk taker. It is the small things that count but they made a big difference and went above the ten year commitment through the passing of my mom, the sickness of my dad, and loss of a job. they stayed with me through all that i always have a place to return if i ever feel lost and truly that's just the way FIVER is.

I have been involved with Fiver as a board member since its founding back in 1998. It is, and will continue to be, my number one charity because of the tremendous successes Fiver grads have enjoyed over the years. Fiver's ten year commitment to its children in unmatched, and the incredible results speak for themselves. As one young Fiver told me when staying at my home during a college tour, "The world needs 400 more Tom Tuckers! (Tom Tucker is the founder of the Fiver Children's Foundation).
