Mission:

"CATS helps those most in need get off the street, achieve stability and establish permanent housing by providing compassionate, culturally sensitive
services."  Incorporated in 1978 to provide a continuum of care for people with substance abuse problems, CATS'' focus is on the "hardest to serve" homeless, those who are dually diagnosed with addiction, physical disabilities, mental illness, domestic violence, veterans, HIV+/AIDS, and transgenders. Our nine unique programs, from our transportation and outreach vans, drop-in centers and shelters, through transitional housing, substance abuse treatment and supportive housing, serve 6,000 homeless men and women each year. CATS works to promote positive change and reduce street deaths.

Programs:

CATS provides essential services including a mobile assistance program to transport homeless and/or substance abusers to much needed facilities, a drop-in center that meets the basic survival needs of homeless individuals, a homeless shelter for women, and a transitional housing center for seniors, substance abusers, HIV/AIDS suffers, the mentally and physically disabled, and domestic violence victims, two substance abuse rehabilitative programs for the chemically dependent, and a permanent supportive housing facility for individuals on low or fixed income who have completed a substance abuse recovery program.

CATS is the most comprehensive program working to end homeless for people in San Francisco. Their highly trained and culturally competent staff responds to San Francisco’s diverse needs; as do their treatment and housing locations specifically designed for women and seniors. CATS’ focus is on getting people off the street, stabilized and into permanent housing. By providing comprehensive and ongoing supportive services CATS breaks the cycle of homelessness.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Interacting with clients and staff and serving on the Board of Directors.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Double its size to help more people.
