Once, the wild horses of Abaco numbered nearly 200. Today they are down to 16. In the 60's a slaughter occurred, three horses were rescued. In 1992 there were 35 horses. Today there are only 16. Inappropriate human intervention, bad habitat (too much rich food on the farm where they have gathered, the horses are more naturally adapted to the forest of Abaco). We are working with the Government of the Bahamas to establish a preserve for the horses where they can be monitored on a daily basis, where immediate medical care will be available as they recover from the obesity and lameness resulting from their time on the farm). We are working to assure the maintenance and growth of this irreplaceable gene pool. The horses apparently have been untouched genetically since their arrival on the island around the time of Columbus. They represent the "Horse of the Conquest" in a pure and unadultereated form. It is our mission to perserve these magnificent animals and halt their extinction.
