Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Child Day Care, Children & Youth, Family Services, Foster Care

Mission: At Westside Children’s Center (WCC), we are committed to breaking the cycles of intergenerational poverty, abuse, and neglect by creating a level playing field – supporting each child’s physical, cognitive and social-emotional development and preparing them for a life of learning. Regardless of economics or family circumstances, we reinforce in children the tools they will need to succeed in life (curiosity, optimism, self-control, resilience, and perseverance). When hardship or crisis poses a threat, WCC provides wide-ranging services designed to build a foundation for both short-term and lifelong success. Our child-centered, family-focused approach embraces those at risk with a comprehensive, fully-integrated support system. • Each day, WCC prepares more than 400 low-income children for success in school and in life with high-quality early education. • WCC protects hundreds of at-risk children each month by strengthening families with case management, resources, support, and counseling to address issues of domestic violence, stress, substance abuse, and depression. • WCC recruits, trains, certifies, and supports foster parents who provide nurturing homes for children who are victims of neglect or abuse. Our highly-trained team ensures that each child receives the tailored supports that she and her family need to be prepared for success in school and beyond.

Target demographics: at-risk children and their families

Direct beneficiaries per year: 2,645 individuals (children and families)

Geographic areas served: Los Angeles

It is absolutely the best, well run, clean, thoughtful, giving, caring and fun school. I LOVE this school. My child loves this school. The school gives great feedback and really has a school feel with a small family approach.

The children that attend this school have a far greater chance of success on the next level and of building a solid foundation of curiosity and learning. Everything in this school is wonderful from the person that greets you at the door to the maintenance guys to the library. If I could myself go to this school I would. I can't say enough good things about this school.

WCC is a great school. My granddaughter has come a long way since she enrolled. She has become more social, caring, and can even count to 10 in Spanish.

WCC teachers and staff are so helpful and caring of my baby. I love the class my baby is in. I also love WCC's emphasis on emotional development and sharing.

All of the WCC teachers cater to individual children and their needs. All children are different and learn in different ways and WCC knows that.

My family has been part of the WCC family for years. We love it here. My niece was the first member of our family to go here and now she is 13. My sisters both recommended WCC. They are very welcoming, warm and attentive. We were lucky to be accepted.

I wasn't sure I could handle working full-time and being a foster parent but thought, "I'll take the classes and become certified. If I decide to foster later, I can." I went through the process - which was much smoother than I'd anticipated - and finalized my certification on July 2 and received a call with a potential placement the same day! I wasn't sure I was ready ... WCC held my hand the whole way. There were ups and downs, lots of paperwork and rules to follow but I always felt supported. My adoption was finalized on August 2 and Jessica (our WCC social worker) was right there with us as we signed the last paper! If you're not sure - check it out. Your life will be changed forever.

I have been volunteering with the WCC every single summer since I started high school. Now that I am a junior I reflect upon my time with the WCC community and realize why I keep coming back. The work you do and the experiences you gain from the WCC are truly invaluable. The enviornment is so friendly and fun! The Westside Children's Center does absolutely amazing work. Being able to volunteer with this center is not only an experience of mutual gratification, but also a privilege. Being a classroom helper is a priceless and enriching experience- perfect for volunteers of all gender, ages, and backgrounds. As a teenager being able to run around with the kids, organize crafts, and help in any other way I can is actually really fun as well as rewarding. I am so grateful and blessed to be apart of the WCC community and highly recommend this center for anyone looking to volunteer with amazing teachers, families, children, and other volunteers. The volunteer coordinator is helpful and will always make sure to give you jobs that are relevant and uses your time wisely. The staff is kind and the atmosphere is overall very enjoyable.

I love volunteering at the Westside Children's center. It's a very special place with a very warm staff and really fun kids! I recently helped out at their Children's Art's festival with a bunch of my girlfriends and everyone wrote to me after asking how they could get more involved because they had so much fun. The work that they are doing at the Westside Children's Center is so important and I am proud to be a part of such an amazing organization!
