Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Commemorative Events, Cultural & Ethnic Awareness, Historical Organizations, History Museums

Mission: VCMI resurrects the history of the almost forgotten African American colonists to Kansas during the last nineteenth century. We do so by bringing into dialogue with the present generation. As one of our volunteers aptly described, "The ancestors are calling for this."

Programs: Hosting biennial Reconnection public history events, 2-day events with workshops, concerts, tours, banquet, reconnecting current day descendants of the black colonists. We also are in the planning stages of developing a museum in Coffeyville, KS, site of the former Votaw Colony.
