Programs: The Upper Valley Teacher Institute's teacher preparation program is based in classrooms and designed for adult college graduates who have usually had other careers before deciding to become teachers. The UVTI model differs from university post-graduate programs in education by reversing the percentage of time traditionally allotted to academic theory and classroom practice. Since teaching is an art best learned through practice, intern's work full-time in a classroom under the tutelage of mentor teachers, who are chosen from among the best professionals in the region. In addition, interns are observed and supported by supervisors on the UVTI staff who are highly experienced educators. This practical experience is reinforced by weekly seminars in which interns study the topics normally covered in conventional academic programs. The aim of the interns' mentors and the purpose of the seminars are the same: to help interns develop and prove their competence as classroom teachers. Successful completion of the program is based on the demonstration of specific teaching competencies.

Mission:
The Upper Valley Educators Institute (formerly the Upper Valley Teacher Institute and the Upper Valley TeacherTraining Program) was established 42 years ago to meet local needs, especially in the rural schools of New Hampshire and Vermont.  Originally part of the Regional Center for Educational Training, UVEI was incorporated as a non-profit 501 (c)(3) in 1988.  Since its inception, UVEI has certified over 700 teachers.  In 2008, the program expanded by establishing a principal certification program, so that the Institute can help meet the looming principal shortage with well-prepared educators, and provide the leadership schools need so that children and teachers succeed.   Our mission is clear:  "UVEI prepares people with strong ideals and diverse experience for careers as inspiring teachers and school leaders."  The Upper Valley Educators Institute provides a distinctive teacher preparation program that is based in classrooms and designed for adult college graduates who have usually had other careers before deciding to become teachers. The UVEI model differs from university post-graduate education programs by reversing the percentage of time traditionally allotted to academic theory and classroom practice. Since teaching is best learned through practice, interns work full-time for an entire academic year in a classroom under the tutelage of mentor teachers, who are chosen from among the best professionals in the region. This practical experience is reinforced by weekly seminars in which interns study the topics normally covered in conventional academic programs. Successful completion of the program is based on the demonstration of specific teaching competencies.  The pedagogy of the principal/school leadership program follows the same principals as the teacher internship model.  UVEI is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and approved for teaching certification by the State of New Hampshire.  Approximately half of UVEI interns also earn certification in Vermont.  Reciprocity is available from many other states, as well. The principal program is also approved by NEASC and by the State of New Hampshire and the State of Vermont Boards of Professional Education.
