Rating: 5 stars   42 reviews

Issues: Education

Location: 1006 Longspur Dr c/o Murray Bass Suisun CA 94585 USA

Mission: We seek to provide to early childhood educational programs free or very low cost Tools of Learning, including phonetic, musical and mathematical instruments that allow even the most vulnerable children to get started on success.
Results: Our impact has been impressive. Many children and families have found themselves to be so much more advanced than other children that schools don't know what to do with them! Which is a great incentive for more people to be involved. Ask us at ToolsofLearning@gmail.com for more info. All programs serving vulnerable children can qualify for FREE or low-cost supplies and materials (in accordancw with our annual fundraising successes).
Target demographics: We make available reading, math and learning support to children and families ages 3 to 5 as they geat ready for a lifetime of learning in schools of all types.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 2000+
Geographic areas served: Home area: Solano County, Northern Bay Area, but we serve programs without charge across the country.
Programs: We make Frontline Phonics and (soon) innovative early math learning tools that reward young people and their families through preschools, childcare settings, Head Start programs, etc.

I came to know of this organization when I was introduced to them as an important organization to interview on my radio show: The Learning Curve Radio Show with Roger & Virginia.
Tools for Learning for Children turned out to be such an important and valuable performer in its field, we interviewed the founder, Murray Bass, four time to get the important message across. Here are the interview links: http://thelearningcurveradioshow.com/?s=murray+bass&submit=Search

Literacy for our children and our society is a passion of mine and my partner, having published our research findings in the book: How to Learn–How to Teach: Overcoming the Seven Barriers to Comprehension

Murray Bass and his organization deliver on their promise wonderfully and I am an avid supporter of what they are doing.

I am co-host of The Learning Curve Radio Show and very active as a professional in the area of educational results improvement. Basically, the current results of the American educational system are appalling (only 31% of college graduates scored at the US Dept. of Education “proficient level” in reading comprehension in the 2003 Adult Literacy Survey. And note, the 2003 result showed a decline from the 1992 score of 40%.) Part of my work is finding remedies for this catastrophic situation.

I have found one organization that stands out as a remarkable success in countering this dangerous decline in national literacy levels; and it stands out as THE success story in facilitating and delivering to kids, in their earliest stages of learning, the success we all hope and want for our children in their educational endeavor.

That organization is TOOLS OF LEARNING FOR CHILDREN

Factually, the damage that brings about the appalling level of school failures we see across the nation begins in pre-school. This is where the damage is done that lays in the foundation for later failures in school.

TOOLS OF LEARNING FOR CHILDREN is achieving literacy and success in learning with pre-schoolers. It sets the kids up in the best possible manner for winning in life and for being productive citizens in our society.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As part of the set up for the radio show with Murray Bass (above) I investigated his credentials and work. It is stellar. Apart from the wonderful results obtained by TOOLS OF LEARNING FOR CHILDREN, perhaps the most valuable factor is the beloved nature of its founder, Murray Bass.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Raise more money for it to hire staff and take it national.

What is unique about this organization?

It correctly recognizes that the bad grades we are seeing in the American educational system begin and are laid in at the pre-school level. TOOLS OF LEARNING FOR CHILDREN addresses getting kids off to a good and proper start as successful life-long learners and productive citizens. This unique aspect of TOOLS OF LEARNING FOR CHILDREN is what makes it so very valuable.

I reviewed Tools of Learning for Children as part of interviewing its founder, Murray Bass on my radio show, The Learning Curve with Roger & Virginia. I found the program and its results to be the best I've seen. I'd like to see this program taken nationwide . . . but of course, like most non-profits the $$$' are short. The program is for preschool and kindergarten and it has close to 100% of its kids comfortably reading when they graduate.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I wrote this about Tools for Learning For Children for our radio show website: How Young Can You Start Your Child on the Path to Successful Learning and Literacy? Today’s guest with Roger & Virginia on The Learning Curve is Murray Bass, the founder and president of Tools of Learning for Children. Murray is an 83 year-old retiree who has some children enjoying reading books as early as 3 years-old! His “wards” are routinely doing it at age 4! What a remarkable story this is. I'm an in home daycare provider that was introduced to Frontline Phonics 2 years ago. I have a full preschool program that I do for my students. Front Line phonics has been so wonderful. I've had so many 2.5 year olds blending and learning to read. My kids that graduate at the age of 5 are reading at a 1st & 2nd grade level. The program has prepared them in ways I couldn't have done with out the help of Frontline and Tools for Learning. I thank Murray for all his help in guiding me and my Little Busy Bee Preschoolers to the Readers they have become!

Shepherd of the Hills Preschool and Kindergarten has been using Tools of Learning since it began. Our children and parents love the program. It has so many positive components to it. Our 4/5 year olds listen to the phonics CD that is provided daily and a copy of the CD also goes home with each child when we start the program in September. The letter of the week card goes home at the beginning of each week so the parents can be involved in what their child is learning and reinforce what is being taught at school. At the end of each week the children work in the workbook that is provided and the children will have the opportunity to practice writing the letter of the week and well as pick out items with the sound that has been taught. The program is well rounded and focuses on the sound of the letter, letter recognition and the writing of the letter. Our children are more than prepared for kindergarten and it is all because of the Tools of Learning Program. We love it and we hope to continue with it for years to come.

I have been donating to this nonprofit for many years and I am so impressed with its board of directors and founders leadership and what they do for the children. The need in our community is so large yet with limited resources they have been able to serve a lot of children and support many families. Tools of Learning for Children understands the future and why these children need our support beyond the class room.

I have been involved with Murray Bass and Tools of Learning for Children from the beginning of the organization. I have never been so impressed with an individual like Murray and his vision to change the lives of children through education and teaching them to read. His perseverance year in and year out is inspiring and has been a blessing to hundreds of children. Tools not only provides Front Line Phonics at no charge to any preschool that will use it, but they also collect good used books and donate them to the schools to give to the students. If you are looking for an organization to donate your time or money to help children, this is it. Bobby D. Stow

My name is Leah Miller. My two children, Mackenna and Mason, have been attending Little Busy Bees Daycare/Preschool in West Sacramento since they were just a few months old. I am writing today because, for quite some time, I have wanted to personally say "thank you" to Mr. Bass and the Tools of Learning for Children Foundation, and the Foundation's donors. Because of the foundation’s generosity providing the Frontline Phonics program for Little Busy Bees Preschool, my daughter Mackenna, who first started the phonics program at 2 1/2 years old by the age of 4 was reading at a second grade level. Mackenna absolutely loves letters – the sounds they make, writing them, and especially reading them!
My husband Ryan and I have read daily to both of our children since they were infants. However, we believe that a big part of Mackenna's success and love for reading is due in part to other contributing influences, including the Frontline Phonics program granted by the Tools of Learning for Children Foundation to Little Busy Bees. This program has provided the preschool with a wonderful curriculum that is fun and engaging for the kids to learn to read (and for the teachers and parents to teach it). Because of the tools provided by your foundation and through the instruction Mackenna received at preschool and at home, she has found confidence and joy in being able to read all on her own. Her ability to read at such a young age has opened her eyes to a new and exciting perspective of the world around her, which has fed her thirst for learning all sorts of new things. At age 4 not only could she read at a second grade level, but she knew how to write the entire alphabet, along with many, many words. Today at 4 1/2 years old and in Transitional Kindergarten, she can read just about anything we put in front of her. Again, thank you Mr. Bass and Tools of Learning for providing the Frontline Phonics program to Little Busy Bees Preschool. Know that the passion behind the Tools of Learning for Children mission has helped to build a foundation of lifelong learning for our children.

I coordinate the Citizenship program that offers pocket-size booklets containing the US Constitution and Declaration of Independence to local schools. They are intended for the 8th and 11th grades, where US History and Government are taught. We have done this for 15 years. This past year, we delivered more than 1,000 copies each to our Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District and neighboring Napa Unified School District.

Feedback from teachers has been totally positive. Students make notes in the booklets and use them for reference at home. We believe this project helps build appreciation for the documents that created our great nation.

I am the Director of Circle of Friends Child Development in Fairfield. We were first introduced to Frontline Phonics program in 2011. The program has been a great part of our curriculum and a great learning tool for our children. We introduce the phonics program at the beginning of our school year in September and by December many of the children know all of their letters and letter sounds. By the end of our program year many of the Pre-kindergarten children and some Preschool children are blending letters and some reading. I am very happy with this program and highly recommend it to any school that values reading in their program.

As a seasoned Board member I am continually proud of the accomplishments of our organization. Through our Citizenship program which provides pocket constitutions to High school students we promote learning to assure as these children grow they are knowledgeable about our government and how it works and what the tenants of this Country. Feedback we receive indicates that the constitution copies enhance the students learning experience and serve as a ready reference for years to come.

Our Front Line Phonics program, distributed to pre-schools public and private, is giving children the necessary tools to be successful in reading as they enter elementary school. Parental and teacher feedback assures us that this program is doing its job. We plan to expand our reach of schools served and introduce a companion math program this year.

Tools of Learning continues to support children in being successful in school form the very beginning. The tools provided to pre-schools by Tools give children an effective and fun tool to assure that they are prepared for success when they enter school by having the required reading skills. Tools continues this work year after year with almost no overhead and an all volunteer Board dedicated to it's mission.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If I could change one thing I would find a benefactor who shares our mission of providing children with the necessary tools to be successful in school and become literate and successful adults.

Tools has been promoting chidhood literacy for years by providing pre-schools of all sizes and shapes with teaching materials that combine phonics principles with good old fashion music and fun to get children reading- ready for kindergarten. Through the efforts of our tirelsess leader and commited Board we have seen many students bloom in the classroom because they have had this preparation. We are currently expanding our scope to provide math material in the same fun and music filled approach. We have dedicated pre-school and kidergarten teachers volunteering their time and expertise to get this expansion off the ground. Our gola is to expand the number of pre-schools we can reach, especially those small independent schools with little funding to support them.

Tools of Learning for Children has two programs. A citizenship program which distributes pocket constitutons to eigth graders in three counties. Teachers tell us that the students use them for reference during the year. And understand our government better after seeing the DVD of "A more perfect Union.' We reach about 10,000 kids each year. Feedback from teachers and some students has been wonderful.
Our Frontline Phonics Reading program has in the last two years been used to teach Hispanic children and their paents how to read English at ther Adult school. An unexpected bonus. It is a rewarding expereience to hear the young Hispanic children reading .
This year,Increase the number of boardmembers for the first time, we will be using our reading program in an Aftican-American church setting. Reaching the children who most need help in breaking the cycle of low information dependence. It is a joy to be associated with Tools of Learning for Children
