Issues: Human Services

Location: PO Box 57443 Jacksonville FL 32241 USA

Mission: To respond rapidly to low income seniors who are faced with a crisis so they can remain in their own home or apartment and live out the winter of their lives in dignity and independence. We do this by developing community and corporate sponsors to raise funds and by channeling those funds to at-home seniors in crisis and occasionally to local organizations which most effectively help seniors stay in their homes.

We provide almost same day response to seniors 60 and over with a household income of $1,000 a month for one or $1,100 for two. Our newest programis focused on reducing electric bills for seniors by purchasing and installing energy efficient refridgerators, stoves, window a/c units etc. Many low income seniors have only one burner on their stove, no gaskets on their refriderator so their electric bill is more than t
they can pay.

We are also gearing up for our annual Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon that provides a special holiday meal for seniors who are in special facilities. More than 1,000 seniors are provided with a special meal every year......the only one they receive.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have pesonally talked with and visited the seniors we help. They are desperate and our services are badly needed. No other organization in the city or state responds as quickly as we do because we have eliminated all of the approvals and paperwork. A senior need only call, be interviewed on the phone by a Customer Specialist who is empowered to make a decision right away and ask the Financial Officer to write a check

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

We would continue to look for more ways to have eligible seniors referred to us so we could help them when they have an urgent need.

THIS ORGANIZATION IS UNIQUE. IT IS THE ONLY ONE IN FLORIDA AND PERHAPS IN THE US TO OUR KNOWLEDGE. ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE EMPOWERED TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISONS TO HELP LOW-INCOME SENIORS THROUGH A CRISIS. THEY HAVE A FEW BROAD PARAMETERS TO WORK WITHIN.NO APPROVAL PROCESS. SENIORS IN CRISIS ARE HELPED GENERALLY WITHIN 24 HOURS..NO INTAKE PROCEDURES, NO FORMS, NO WAITING LIST...UNHEARD OF IN TODAY'S "HIGH TECH" ENVIRONMENT WHEN ONE GETS A RECORDING. THERE IS NO OFFICE, NO PAID STAFF, ONLY DEDICATED, CARING VOLUNTEERS WITH EXCELLENT TALENTS AND SKILLS COMPRISE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND THE VOLUNTEER STAFF THAT ANSWER THE PHONES. GOD HAS BLESSED DUVAL COUNTY WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY ORGANIZATION WITH EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE. THE BIGGEST CHALLANGE FOR THIS ORGANIZATION IS RAISING FUNDS TO CONTINUE TO HELP SENIORS AND MAINTAINING THE TRAINING OF VOLUNTEERS. IF YOU CARE ABOUT A SENIOR WHO LIVES BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL AND MAKES DECISIONS DAILY BETWEEN FOOD AND MEDICATION, YOU WOULD MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVE OF A SENIOR WHO GAVE ALL OF THEIR LIFE AND NOW FIND THEY MUST ASK FOR HELP. PLEASE SEND A CHECK TODAY TO P.O.BOX 57443, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32241 OR GO TO WWW.SENIORLIFEJAX.COM AND DONATE ON LINE.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

FEELING THE SATISFACTION OF HELPING A LOW-INCOME SENIOR THROUGH A CRISIS AND HEARING THE RELIEF IN THEIR VOICE

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

SEEK EVEN MORE WAY TO RAISE FUNDS TO HELP SENIORS ALTHOUGH OUR VP OF DEVELOPMENT IS OUTSTANDING.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

THE FEELING OF HELPING PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO PLACE ELSE TO TURN AND WORKING WITH THE AMAZING BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND VOLUNTEERS

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

DEDICATED TO HELPING OTHERS

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

NOT COMPLETE ITS MISSION. THIS ORGANIZATION CANNOT GROW TOO LARGE OR IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESPOND IN 24 HOURS. IT IS A BALANCING ACT BETWEEN RAISING MONEY AND RESPONDING RAPIDLY

Ways to make it better...

IT COULDN'T BE BETTER. I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF HELPING OTHERS AND SERVING WITH OUR TALENTED BOARD OF DIRECTORS

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

FUND RAISING AND TRAINING

One thing I'd also say is that...

I'D LIKE TO PUT TOGETHER A PACKAGE TO SEND TO OTHER CITIES SO THEY TOO CAN HAVE THE BENEFIT OF THIS WONDERFUL ORGANIATION

I serve as a Board member and volunteer for this all volunteer organization. It is so rewarding to be in a position to assist our low income seniors in their time of emergency need. I have served as a phone volunteer and have been able to assist first hand seniors with much needed medications, rental payments to avoid eviction, and special medical equipment. Also, I have been able to work with the senior to help them connect with SLF partners (other agencies) to continue assistance after SLF has met the senior's emergency need. We are one of the few organizations without delay in providing the needed funds.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Providing assistance to our seniors. It is so rewarding to help them in times of emergency. I certainly have received more from the experience than I have given.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

SLF is an all volunteer organization. The volunteers give willingly of their time and talent. They are true role modela in the community.

Around 5 years ago, when the organization(SLF) began helping seniors with bills they were struggling to pay, I answered the phone among other many duties. I found it particularly heartwarming to have the opportunity to work directly with each senior and help them with not only paying a bill but what they might do to conserve money by changing their lifestlye or applying for appropriate services. For example some seniors were bogged down with bank charges from overdrawn bank accounts. I suggested they move their checking accounts to a nonprofit credit union where the charges were free or minimal. I also found that some were eligible to apply for free monthly medicare charges. This change would save the senior approximately $88.00 a month for an indifinate time which could add up to thousands over a period of their senior lifetime. There are no words to describe how blessed you can be for interacting with these precious people. If you have any spare time to give I would like to encourage you to get involved with our organization or even make a donation to us to help these seniors. If you would like to find out how you can get involved or make a donation, please contact me on my cell at 904 504-8840. As the customer service representative I will be glad to tell you more about our organization.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

SLF has given me the opportunity to give back to my community and help those less fortunate than me

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The only change would be to have more dollars to help seniors when they call for help.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

My contact with seniors, doners, and Board Mambers

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

All staff are dedicated to our mission and want to help seniors. We always go the extra mile to make a difference.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help thousands instead of hunderds of low income seniors with bills they are struggling to pay.

Ways to make it better...

It could not have been any better! You get out of an organization what you contrbute to it.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Finding donors and sponsors for our organization. Employers are more careful with their money due to difficult financial times

One thing I'd also say is that...

Do not be afraid to make that call to us because you will be blessed beyond words

This is a very special organization. It is all-volunteer, so that 96 percent of the money raised goes directly to help senior citizens in crisis in Duval County, FL. I raise funds for it and serve on the Board because I have answered phone calls to our hotline and know that the need is real and the organization’s money is well spent. When seniors have no place else to turn in an emergency, we are there to write a check to pay their rent or a utility bill or for a prescription, usually within 24 hours. It is that rapid response that makes the Senior Life Foundation so effective. Donations and volunteers are always needed. Visit www.seniorlifejax.org.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the passion and dedication shown by its volunteer Board and customer care hotline volunteers and in the wonderful thank you letters that come in every day from the seniors we have been able to help.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that I have been trained to answer calls to our hotline and to verify requests, and then empowered to get checks issued right away to resolve the crises. It feels very good to help someone who is truly in need.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

caring, compassionate, and eager to do whatever they can to make a difference in someone's life. Most of our clients have a total household income of less than $1,000 per month.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

set up an endowment so that its work could continue in perpetuity, increase the amount available to help each client, expand its services to neighboring counties, and create a national model for other communities to follow.

Ways to make it better...

the downturn in the economy wasn't making it so hard for all nonprofits to raise funds and if the states had more funding available to help low-income seniors.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

One thing I'd also say is that...

this organization is so compelling that volunteers ask us if they can be of service.
