This mission is carried out through the operation of five important community resources: Hershey Community Archives, Hershey Gardens, Hershey Museum, Hershey Theatre and Chocolatetown Square. Three of these resources were founded by Milton Hershey during his lifetime (Gardens, Museum, Theatre). The Archives’ was founded as a collaborative effort among the Hershey entities, spearheaded by the Foundation. Chocolatetown Square was built by The Hershey Company as a community park in the heart of town and was immediately gifted to the Foundation after its completion in 1990.
The Foundation’s mission statement had directed, or is directing, the adoption of standards for excellence in education, programming, collections management and facilities. It has ultimately led to increased efficiency and cooperation in all aspects of operations as well as the development of strategies for communication and funds development.
In the spirit of Milton Hershey, The M.S. Hershey Foundation collaborates with other community organizations whenever possible including the Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society and Derry Township Schools. Hundreds of local schoolchildren participate in programs at Hershey Theatre, Hershey Museum, Hershey Gardens and Hershey Community Archives for free each year.
The Foundation’s mission is a common thread woven through each of the operations. It ensures Milton Hershey’s vision for his model community and the remarkable story of his business failures and phenomenal success will endure by preserving collections and facilities, developing innovative programs and collecting relevant stories.
